Nick's TMNT

Nickelodeon uploaded the entire first episode online for free.

... um. ... that was ... a sugar high.

Definitely the wackiest and most kinetic of any of the adaptations. Though it is also the slimmest on substance, and since this is TMNT, that is saying something! At least for the pilot, it was non-stop action. Animation looks a tad lazy and extremely limited, but it's an acquired taste. There are some moments that look just like a real anime, when they're not tweening the same drawing every pose! I definitely wanna try drawing these characters sometime.

So was just linked this thread. How are people finding the show online? good or bad?

Bad. It seems like they're making it like a remake of the first live-action movie (all the turtles have the same dude-bro personality, flashy colors, etc), which I also didn't like. One thing I disagree on is people thinking it's much like Teen Titans Go!. The art style is not at all like Go!, and admittedly the humor here is worse.

It was okay. I never found anything offensive, just hyper or bland. There are some aspects I liked but it was more problematic. The biggest problem is that it doesn't acknowledge the property's history or its following. That's not a bad thing but if something does that, it needs to be very impressive and/or subversive which it wasn't. As a cartoon, it's nothing worth noting. As an adaption of a beloved franchise, Nickelodeon is going to upset a lot of people.

I like the animation, the opening and the voice cast but otherwise found it rather bland.

At this point the animation is the show’s saving grace.

Hopefully it improves as they find their groove & maintain the animation quality.

[up][up][up] Eh I don’t find the humor that bad, it’s at least better than Go. Go’s humor is focused on absolute nonsense & the characters acting like pricks.

Here it’s just wacky & more high-energy.

I generally enjoyed the pilot. The rushed pacing is mostly my issue, but I'll give it maybe five episodes (probably more).

Go! also breaks the fourth wall constantly and makes clever jabs at DC superhero movies and series.

[up]Let's hope the later is the case here despite most of the inspiration clearly being from the live action movies.

So I'm not familiar with the franchise (I've only seen the 2007 CGI movie and the first two or three episodes of the 2012 show.) but I liked what's been released so far.

[up]If you're into comics, I highly recommend IDW's current comic by Waltz and co-creator Eastman. You don't need to know much about any of the previous incarnations but it's respectful of all of them.

Guess this place kinda died, huh.

I enjoyed the last few episodes. The bunny one is the first I liked Splinter in the reboot, the Stockboy episode actually managed to get me off guard, and the villains have been interesting to me.

Uh, are you sure you don't mean the second live-action movie?

The show’s animation is the drawing point really.

It is amazingly spectacular to watch & I mean that in no way negative or on the implication that it’s “So Bad it’s Good”.

It’s just great.

@ kyun

There IS a difference.

The first movie isn't regarded as Darker and Edgier, and the second movie Lighter and Softer, for no reason at all.

Part of that comes down to the writing of the characters.

The Turtles are pretty much "dude-bro" in the second movie (which I'd argue is the worst out of the trilogy but that's not the point of the topic here).

In the first movie: Leo is laidback and brotherly; Raph is angry and violent; Donnie is thoughtful and brooding; and Mikey is innocent and clingy.

Pretty distinct, if you ask me.

As I’ve watched more episodes of Rise, I began deciphering more personality from Turtles as they find their own voices.

Leo is the team jerk with an ego, Raph is the tough guy with a heart of gold, essentially a big fat softie & his try’s at being leader are genuinly adorable because he’s such a softie, Mikey is the energetic kid with a touch of artistry, & Donnie can be rather sarcastic & annoyed due to frustration with his family's “quirks.”

For all of them there is a bit more of unity with the group as unlike past incarnations there’s no major flaws (yet) such as Raph’s anger issues, Mikey’s laziness, or Leo’s dutiful nature causing conflict in the group so they are generally more friendly with each other.

Does anyone think April in the 2012 series is similar to Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

Think about it.

  • Being the redheaded Muggle Best Friend to the titular character? Check.
  • Having powers as the series progress? Check.
  • Corrupted from the dependency of powers which is only stopped when being talked down by the guy who has a crush on her? Check.
  • Having better control over her powers from said experience? Check.

Anyway, I looked into this link about it, and it's been in my head ever since.

Saw the recent episode of Rise, "Bug Busters".

I think that Big Mama might be one of my favorite new additions to the TMNT mythos.

I liked her as well. Wonder if she's going to stay opposed to Draxum's plan or they'll be teaming up in the future. Also curious if the Battle Nexus will be important later.

I feel like for a show this action heavy with plenty of over the top powers, a tournament arc would be perfect fit.

I’d laugh my ass off if Mikey wins again. tongue

What does anyone think of this X Meets Y thing about the 2012 TV version of April?

She is Willow Rosenberg meets Psylocke.

Looks like the Battle Nexus ended up being important after all and definitely wasn't expecting a Villain Song.

I thought the episode was generally fun, and the musical sequence was neat.

I'm still not completely used to the tone of the series, but I'm getting there.
