Snow Queen is getting it's revival?

The Half Life: Episode 3 of Animation?

YEEEES!

(Now if only Disney didn't shut down their Russian branch so they could get cracking on their animated adaption of Swan Lake... And avoid the inevitable The Swan Princess comparisions by making it a little closer to the original ballet)

He is not as much unable to feel as he got a troll mirror splinter in his eye and in his heart, so he is unable to feel good things and see good things.

That's how it starts, but by the time Gerda finds him, he's been with the Snow Queen so long that he's completely emotionless and acts like a robot. That's how I always read that scene anyway.

I have the Russian version on DVD—pretty low production values, but it's a decently plotted retelling. I did like the one major change that was made, where it was the Snow Queen's snowflakes that afflicted Kay instead of the Devil's mirror that would never be mentioned again. Even as a kid, I loved the story but always wondered why it started out talking about the Devil and then shifted gears.

Soyuzmultfilm never really had access to high budget. They, however, were running wild with animation methods. Shadow puppet theaters, Roger Rabbit Effect, etc. Even Tale of Tales I hate infinitestimally is cool.

I did like the one major change that was made, where it was the Snow Queen's snowflakes that afflicted Kay instead of the Devil's mirror that would never be mentioned again.
That part has its explanation. in Soviet translations of Andersen's tales, every mention of religion has been completely removed, for obvious reasons.

it started out talking about the Devil and then shifted gears.
I do recall Gerda reading Pater Noster in the Ice Queen's palace for the rampaging snow monsters to scatter.

Did you know?

The reason Snow Queen looks different from other people is because she's MoCap.

The Fifties had motion capture already.

Dammit, she's a queen of ice, she doesn't even feel cold.
Yes, that's always confused me as well, she is the Snow Queen, wouldn't she like cold the way we like warm?

As for the hand drawn thing, I think it will be. I'm probably wrong but I think I'd heard that Dinsey is releasing movies as hand-drawn, CGI, hand-drawn etc. once per year. This year was Whinnie the Pooh, which was hand drawn. Frozen doesn't come out until 2013, so...
Except that in 2012 they're releasing Wreck It Ralph, a CGI film, and apparently after "Frozen" they're releasing "King Of The Elves", another CGI project. There is one hand-drawn project by John Musker and Ron Clements in pre-production, but not much about it is known -seriously, nobody even knows what the plot is about- so I wouldn't hold my breath on many traditionally animated projects on the next five years.

[up]Well that just makes my point stronger. We've got one GI projects, then this, then another CGI project. Unless you can show me the project after King Of The Elves, I'm going to assume that the new hand-drawn thing will be it. <shrug>

, she is the Snow Queen, wouldn't she like cold the way we like warm?

Fur coats don't make people warm as much as they isolate people from the uncomfortable temperatures outside. This is why nations native to deserts wear fur - it prevents them from getting hotter if the outside temperature is above their bodily temperature + whatever heat the sweat can compensate for.

This is why the Snow Queen wears fur outside but not inside. Outside's too hot for her. The inside of her castle is way colder.

...

I have never thought of this before.

Andersen was a Christian (though a depressed one) so Christianity makes appearances in many of his tales. I suspect however that the Disney version will be secular. (Besides the whole thing with the Devil's mirror does seem like a loose plot end.)

The Queen will probably wear White Fur simply because that's part of her classic imagery. (Wonders how many people will mistake her for Narnia's White Witch.)

The original story meanders all over the place; they will likely trim it down. (I hope they keep the Robber Girl at the least.)

And yeah, I suspect it will be CGI. (I'd prefer traditional Disney animation though.)

Again, as I said, Gerda repelled the onslaught at the castle with a prayer. Ergo, the Queen's army is inherently demonic.

If anything they'll have to expand it. The soviet Snow Queen cartoon is an hour length and very faitful to the original story.

I hope they won't add any strong male leads or romance, though.

White Witch.
I do think that the queen of snow is a recurring element in fairy tales throughout the world.

Thought that too, seeing as it predates the cartoon by a decade, but a translation hasn't been released prior to 1978, thus it's coincidental.

The original tale is very episodic, the Devil/Goblin King mirror never goes beyond being a McGuffin, and the Snow Queen motivations are never really clear, the russian version gets away with being faithful because there is absolutely no character development in it, it is, just like the fairytale, one set piece after another.

The thing with the Devil's mirror is that it isn't resolved for anyone except the main characters. What happened to all the other people who got "infected" by it?

This tale just feels to me like Andersen had ideas for several different stories and just told them in one. Why couldn't the boy have been bewitched by the Snow Queen herself, for example?

Another thing: given how postmodern many animated movies are these days, I fully expect that The Queen will have an expanded story. Perhaps she lost a son and the kid she captures is her Replacement Goldfish? (This would also reduce the pedophilic vibes that the tale sometimes gives.) I must admit I'd rather have her as a partially likable villain than another Maleficent.

Not necessarily. According to some folklore, faeries could also be repelled by artifacts of Christianity. As I mentioned upthread, the Snow Queen has a lot of The Fair Folk about her.

I don't think Andersen ever intended to fully resolve the business of the Devil's mirror, in this story or any other. He was a very depressed man, and it was probably just a case of "This is why the world sucks."

I do hope not. I hope there will be Blue-and-Orange Morality involved. I like The Fair Folk in general. They are cool. They are not evil, they are just inhuman and operate under wildly differerent mindsets.

I'm tired of traditional power-hungry villains, overly non-villainous villains and "imevilcuzimevil" villains. I would like to see a force of nature as an antagonist, something that doesn't have function and imperative as different concepts.

[up]I have no problem with characters like that (depending on how well they are written of course) but I'm trying to think how Disney will handle things. That is why I don't expect it to have any religious references, for example.

Basically, the Snow Queen story can be summed up as "The Queen (for some reason) bewitches a boy, and the girl who loves him saves him with her love". Not bad, but not too original either. The rest of the stuff- the Troll King, The Robber Girl etc.- are almost incidental to the story. If there's a Faiy Tale that begs to be simplified, it's this one.

Also, watch Disney age the kids enough so the romance angle can be better played.

I just watched the animated, Soviet Russian movie version and I quite enjoyed it. My only complaint is the way the Snow Queen is defeated, which is very anti-climactic.

[up][up] I'm hoping the kids are aged maximum to 13/14. But since Disney is Disney, I won't get my hopes up too high and at least hope for a well-developed romance with good chemistry. And I hope they don't take out the robber girl; she was one of the best parts of the movie.

I hate it when they try to use snappy one-word Verbed Titles to sell movies. It's like the new Dreamworks Face.

The fact that they're bothering to give it a Tangled-esque rename makes me think they're banking on it doing as well as Tangled. Which makes me doubt they'll risk making it hand-drawn.sad

If the movie itself is as good as Tangled was though, I guess that'd be alright.

If someone in the movie says "I was frozen today!", I'll forgive anything, lol.

[up]Ever since the early 2000s the plan was to make it CGI, I think it was only considered to make it in 2D during the 90s.
