X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

I can't really blame them. Unless you append Wolverine to the title the last few teen books have been sales duds.

Maybe in Wave 2.

[up][up] New Mutants is going to be using a lot of the younger mutants (like Glob and Anole), so we might see a school in that book.

According to this tumblr post, Magneto has gotten along better with Lorna than he has the twins.

....I admit, they're convincing me.

Pietro and Wanda already never got along with Mags. Still, while I'm okay with the retcon of their parentage, I'm still not sure if it's right for them to not be mutants...

...is there a way to tie both origins together somehow?

Final annotations for POX 6

  • The parallel between X^3's mutants flying in the preserve and the mutants flying during the ROTJ party definitely now seems really ominous.
  • "Arakko 20" may mean that it and possibly Apocalypse's OG Horsemen will be the focus next year.
  • The deliberate usage of "Stronghold" that Moira planted into Magneto is another extension of how Krakoa and mutants have seemingly been building up equivalents to the machines.

I know we're all high on Hickman now, but for some reason my mind drifted to Remender; I wonder where his stewardship of the franchise would've gone had he stayed longer. He set up a number of interesting-sounding antagonists in his books, including Apocalypse's predecessors as the Celestials' "representative" on Earth, various Weapon Plus subjects, and most intriguingly to me an evil corporation that manufactures cloned made-to-order supervillains called the White Sky Foundation.

And none of them really went anywhere because he left.

Remember Remender (say that ten times fast) wasn't writing the main X-book — he was writing Uncanny X-Force and he had a pretty long run on it, too. Remender, for me, is also hit-and-miss — some of his stuff has been great, but others have been, uh, AXIS and Uncanny Avengers, both of which were terrible to me.

X-Men Monday where Jonathan Hickman answers your questions. And he has some pretty good answers, too. Also: there will be a Moira comic book coming out (probably in wave 2), there was supposed to be a thousand-year-timeline at the end of POX #6, but the writer of the Moira book asked it not to be included. The same Cylobel in Timeline 9 and Timeline 6 was due to the fact that "black brain hounds" all look the same and in every time, Nimrod eventually creates them to betray mutants, which was going to be a reveal in the timeline, but was left out.

I really want to know who is writing the Moira comic, since it's not Hickman himself. We know both Leah Williams and Vita Ayala are writing comics in wave 2, so it might be one of them.

X-Men #1 was...damn good.

It begins with a flashback to Professor X getting Cyclops to open his eyes using the Ruby Quartz glasses for the first time, then cuts to the assault on the Orchis station. They free a bunch of mutant children from statis tubes, but one statis tube holds an "atemporal" post-human, who looks like a negative. She teleports away, but Cyclops decides to get the children to Krakoa instead of trying to follow.

On Krakoa, Storm decides to stay with two mutant child who are silver and gold (worried about their energy output), while Cyclops goes back to his home, the Summer House, which is on the Blue Area of the Moon. The entire Summers Family (and Wolverine) actually live on the Summer House, including Cable and Rachel. They have a big dinner with the Starjammers and Cyclops and Alex gift Corsair with a Krakoan flower, so he can visit whenever he wants.

At the Orchis Forge, the newly arrived leader of Orchis looks over those who died during the X-Men's raid in House of X. He talks to Dr. Gregor, who is working on something, about her husband, who died. She says that she can bring him back.

NEXT: ARAKKO.

Heh there's something funny about Wolverine living on the Summers compound. Like I guess Scott's okay with Jean banging Logan as long as he gets in on some of the action. tongue

Here's the thing: it's actually hinted that Scott and Polaris might have a thing. Which would be pretty interesting.

Also, I love Gabriel Summers. He is the best. Instead of changing him from a megalomaniacial villain, he's still one...just in regards to cooking steaks instead of conquering planets. Logan insists on having his steak rare, but Gabriel tells him medium rare. It's hilarious.

Also, the dishwashing system of Krakoa is disgusting (it's Krakoan slime that eats any leftover compounds). And yet also a compromise with Krakoa, who wanted organic dishes as well.

Also, we might have another Wave 2 book: X-Corps.

yeah, that line Cyclops says: "I have you, I have your father, and I have my boy"—at first I read that as hooking up with Polaris. But I figured it was more about having a mutant community. Maybe both. I guess we don't know what mutant relationship politics are like.

And that negative child who was rescued is from The Vault! Glad to see Mike Carey's run get some acknowledgement. I think Hickman was a fan of the posthumans he introduced.

Has Vulcan ever talked this way before? I read Deadly Genesis but none of the Shi'ar space opera stuff later involving him.

EDIT: "Be careful, they're sure to be savvy—all these apes have Ph.Ds!" haha.

So I think I liked the first issue of X-Men more than the entirety of HOX/POX. Mostly because it has some Goddamn character focus.

Yeah, I think Hickman's X-Men book will have a lot more character studies (especially since each issue is a done-in-one), rather than HOX/POX which was about the Big Picture.

"Be careful, they're sure to be savvy—these apes all have Ph Ds!" pfffft [lol]

So we finally get to see the head of Orchis with Mars/Devo out and about, it'll be interesting to see what makes him tick besides recruiting from the various organizations and glossing over the fact hat one of them is Hydra. Also covering his face but not quite as much as Xavier because parallels.

I mostly like the scratchiness of the artwork but the lips are a bit off-putting.

[up][up]Honestly, the reason the Claremont era was so good was because of all the Character Development. All of Hickman's ideas and world-building are hella interesting, but it's that focus on the characters that I want to see.
