X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

[up][up]Not really? Among other things, they've got the fucking Pheonix. Two of them on a good day. Everyone else is just gravy.

Half the time, the Phoenix is as much a threat to the X-Men as it is to whomever they're fighting.

I got it, take a trip back to Japan & make a Yakuza story in the vein of the Yakuza game seiries with a bunch of mutants.

Wolverine may or may not be involved.

I'll even title the arc "Like a Dragon" after the seiries Japanese title.

I really wonder why Magneto hasn't just decided to take over the country yet. In Morrison's run he shows he's strong enough to stage a coup on a very large city quite handily, and that's not even his strongest showing.

[up]I don’t know, but I’m greatly looking forward to extremely old senile Magneto in a decade or so. I mean, Magneto was born in 1940 at the latest if he remembers Auschwitz, so he’s already at least 79. Just imagine the Brotherhood asking for instructions and Magneto just complains about rap music and how a loaf of bread used to cost a penny. And the Eisners come pouring in.

Yep.

It's a bit more complicated than that: when Xavier died, his mind still survived on the Astral Plane, where it was enmeshed in a conflict with the Shadow King. During Charles Soule's Astonishing X-Men, this conflict finally reaches outside the Astral Plane, so a group of X-Men go into the Astral Plane to fight the Shadow King and find the Xavier's mind is still alive. Blah blah blah, they have a Battle in the Center of the Mind, the X-Men eventually win, and then Fantomex decides that he will give up his body so that Xavier can inhabit it, Xavier does and decides to call himself "X" now. (Or "The Man Called X.") Then he erases the X-Men's minds (except Psylocke), so that nobody knows he's still alive.

Yeah, I know: what a dick.

I’m thinking there be various types of Mutant crime families.

Ya got a bunch of Mutants who band together to form their own group, am individual Mutant walks in & takes over by beating up the strongest guy, or long held leaders of crime families maintain their power by becoming Mutants themselves so ya have these old guys & their family memeber suddenly gaining powers because they share a family X-Gene.

This is interesting. Most of the homosexual mutants in the series have been Straight Gay instead of the more camp type.

I just found out that Leah Williams has a tumblr where she goes behind the scenes with a lot of the "Age of X-Man" stuff. Like:

This alternative timeline has gone one for about 3 months when Ao X kicks off, but they think it’s been three years. Most but not all folks have had a lot of memories, among other things, taken from them. And yeah, it totally does come apart the minute you start poking at it, but it’s not really built to last, I think. Which is..an interesting layer to Nate’s character that would be worth exploring after this.

I was asking Zac & Lonnie some reeeeal awkward questions for a while in terms of how comprehensive/airtight Nate’s vision of this world is–

‘hey! does Betsy still know what sex is? would she still know what ‘pregnant’ means if Nate’s apparently removed all this sexual knowledge from everyone here? ooh their sex drives too, huh? so what’s sex education like in schools here? like even with lowered libidos, they obviously all still have the equipment, right? so how are young mutants learning about their changing bodies? what about young mutants getting periods for the first time? do they know what that’s for? what’s the currency like in Ao X? is there a currency? are they communists? how’s the economy work? is there revisionist history to inflate mutant contributions to society and overlook humans’? how d–’

Leah Williams asks interesting questions. When she's not engaging in the worst (best) shitposting, of course.

You know, it's funny, when Age of X-Man was announced, my reaction was basically to roll my eyes and make wanking motions. But I'm thoroughly enjoying it. There's a lot of genuinely interesting stuff going on in each of the tie-ins. It's compelling stuff.

I really hope all the writers on Age of X-Man tie-ins get new titles coming out of it. In particular, Marvel needs to put Leah Williams on an X-Men ongoing. (If they had any sense, they'd put her on a New Hellfire Club ongoing.) I'd love for Vita Ayala to get a book with Bishop and Gabby, because those two have a lot of potential to be a wonderful pairing, and Ayala clearly knows it. Iceman can be in that book, too, Grace made Iceman and Bishop a fun pairing. And then let Ayala have whoever else they want, too.

But yeah, Age of X-Man has some great creative teams, and I'd love for them to get more work when it ends, so that I can have some X-titles that don't piss me off. (Uncanny X-Men is shit, and X-Force seems to have killed off Warpath.)

I think Uncanny X-Men is okay so far, not great, but not terrible. But yeah, the Age of X-Man minis are blowing it out of the water by actually doing something completely different and asking interesting questions about the utopia/dystopia they are in.

And yeah, I really hope that Seanan McGuire, Leah Williams, and Vita Ayala get X-books after this. Also, Tim Seeley, but that's a given because his Shatterstar mini was amazing.

Claremont, Hama, and Keith return for Wolverine: Exit Wounds. Like Peter David and Dale Keown's Incredible Hulk: Last Call, Wolverine: Exist Wounds is a one-shot for Marvel's 80th anniversary. "Set during the last scenes of the Kitty Pryde and Wolverine, this character-driven short story takes Wolverine, Kitty, and Yukio to new adventures. Wolverine is the best he is at what he does, but what he does best is..."

Very, very interesting. I think Claremont's last issue was the Magneto issue of X-Men: Black. I wonder if he's going to get an ongoing soon?
