[up]Yeah...in a way that still does way more damage to Venezuela. It's not a good thing when the biggest customer of the thing that makes up 90% of what you sell decides to boycott you.

Like I said, fucking up is Trump's thing.

I can see the why and how's.

Also, I've reading stuff from the satirical site ''El Chigüire Bipolar" and they really weren't lying in that they have become seers, they really did predict actions of the Venezuelan Goverment.

Poe's Law at it's depressing finest.

I dread that we have reached the age when satire and reality are one and the same. Do you think anyone would have seriously thought that a guy with the same kind of bluster as Senator Armstrong would become president of the United States?

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, maybe we should try to find the absolutes that tie us.

Senator Armstrong has the benefit of being a Well-Intentioned Extremist. Trump lacks even that.

Where video-game comparisons are being made, present-day Venezuela is looking eerily like a badly-run game of Tropico, with Maduro being a particularly incompetent El Presidente.

Kind of a shame, really.

You could spin it to Chavez, but let's say that Motive Decay is kind of a constant in our region.

You know, it would be very ironic if Trump starts to give the green light to alternative/cleaner sources of energy, not out of concern for the environment, but to highlight the “independence” of the USA to foreign energy sources like oil or coal.

Cuban doctors speak about their actions in Venezuela.

So. Cuba does things as outright denying medical helps to members of the opposition and threatening them with literal "join the party or (we let you) die" threats, Dentists ordered to influence the vote of their patients.

“It was hard with Chávez, but with Maduro it was worse,” another Cuban doctor said. “It became a form of blackmail: You’re not going to have medicine. You’re not going to have free health care. You’re not going to have prenatal care if you’re pregnant.”

Cuban Free Healthcare ain't free.

...as the Chinese America Philosopher M84 said, Disgusted but not suprised.

When confronted with these claims, representatives from the Cuban government rejected the doctors’ assertions, saying that their mission to Venezuela has saved millions of lives, patients that, according to the official rhetoric, had been left to die by the “Fourth Republic,” the 40 years of democracy before Cháve. Contrary to their claims, and to what Casey suggests in his report, healthcare has been a Constitutional right in Venezuela since 1961, 38 years before Chávez attributed the honor to himself

You gotta feel for those doctors whose own government is forcing them to betray the Hippocratic Oath. Note that this was something that started with Chavez and merely got worse with Maduro.

And yeah, I'm not surprised. Even the article expresses that sentiment.

These statements are shocking but not surprising. The Venezuelan government has used “social benefits” as a coercion method for years. Dr. Carlos Ramírez, a dental surgeon, recalls doing house-to-house visits, carrying vitamins and antihypertensive drugs. Once he and his colleagues gained the patients’ confidence, they had to instruct them on how to vote. These practices were present since the beginning of the Barrio Adentro program, when Chávez brought the first group of Cuban doctors back in 2003, as a response to a series of strikes organized by the Venezuelan Medical Federation. But after he died, and given Maduro’s lack of popular support, the situation escalated.

Oh, and this bit in particular pissed me off:

By 2015, the government went as far as giving white robes to officers from the Sport and Agriculture ministries, who visited patients pretending to be doctors, telling people to vote for the PSUV candidates for that year’s National Assembly election, while giving them medications without even knowing what they were.

Just try to imagine all the ways that went horribly wrong.

Maybe those Cuban physicians had no alternative, being themselves hostages of their own system; most have left the country, some returned to Cuba, but many, like those interviewed by Casey, used Venezuela to escape to a new life in free countries.

Nuff said.

How Barrio Adentro wrecked the Venezuelan healthcare system.

Tldr. Barrio Adentro was created to adress Venezuelan healthcare issues but ended up becoming a Poor Man's Substitute for the actual Hospitals healthcare system.

[up] They literally did the classical latinoamerican meme of "the robes make the doctor".

And yeah. That's a lot of danger. In the best case they just receted Paracetamol randomly. And that's the best

Mind you, Barrio Adentro doubled as something less often discussed: a massive, state-sponsored human trafficking program, where Cuban doctors’ working conditions bordered on slavery. It’s been estimated that out of every $100 Venezuela paid for their services, the Cuban regime kept as much as $96. Doctors were not allowed to bring their families — a kind of hostage guarantee system that smacked of medievalism. But we digress.

Free healthcare ain't free—Cuba.

But the program did work to bolster the government’s interests. Chávez sold Barrio Adentro to both Venezuelans and foreigners, as proof of his interest in the people’s welfare, and it was key for his victory in the 2004 referendum. Even today, a quick search in Google Scholar will show hundreds of papers, from Venezuela and abroad, analysing Barrio Adentro’s role as a “tool to fight exclusion and strengthen democracy”.

It was also the project that cemented the relationship between Venezuela and Cuba, paving the way for the pervasive penetration of the Cuban government into the Venezuelan State.

Ah Cuba, we always ignore how you're to blame as much as Chavez himself.

As raziel365 noted, Cuba even served as the model on which Chavez based his Venezuelan socialist system.
