Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Mr Google to the rescue A supporting silver surfer character, doesn't appear to have been the surfer/a herald before.

A female Silver Surfer in The '60s? That sounds groovy. I'm in!

[up][up] She was Norrin's love interest/primary source of angst. It'll be cool to see her as a Herald!

Though I hope Surfer isn't getting gender-flipped and Norrin is still in this.

Never said its a bad thing, just doesn't jive with me much the possible idea of heavily compositing or switching Surfer with another character like that.

I mean to be fair I am not sure any actor could match what Laurence Fishburne brought to Norrin in the Rise of the Silver Surfer.

It has a lot of nostalgia among a lot of fans, but even people who hate it thought Fishburne and Michael Chiklis were great in their roles.

[up] I've heard that Chiklis has given his blessing to Ebon Moss-Bachrach to play Ben, so that's a good sign.

I have trepidation about leaping straight to Galactus in the first FF film but I hope they stick with just the Surfer. Build to Galactus. Don't waste him as a disposable one shot baddie.

[up] Hey, so long as they don't make him proto-Calamity Ganon again, I'm cool with however they portray Galactus.

Since they may be trying to pivot away from Kang, they could be trying to set up Galactus as the new phase final boss.

Let the Marvel fanfiction writers go wild with this one.

[up][up][up][up] You act like it's impossible to do an epic, self-contained story. There's nothing wrong with introducing a villain and also defeating them at the same time as long as its done well. I mean heck, Galactus was introduced and defeated for the first time over the course of three comics, which is about movie length.

As for the Silver Surfer casting, I think that's a good choice for a Gender Flip. The Surfer is iconic enough that most people have heard of him, but weird enough that most people also probably know next to nothing about him.

I wonder if they're going the route the '90s cartoon and have it so the team gets their powers from the Silver Surfer.

While Silver Surfer is pretty much a given considering this is the Fantastic Four, having Shalla-Bal be the Surfer instead of Norrin Radd is surprising given her absence in the comics.

I mean heck, Galactus was introduced and defeated for the first time over the course of three comics, which is about movie length.

That first arc barely scratches the surface of Galactus. Yeah, the character was a one-note threat disposed of surprisingly easy in his first appearance. The same is true of most villains. In Magneto's first appearance, he was a cackling troll who fucked up test rockets for lulz and then ran off giggling. I don't think anyone's clamoring for that movie.

So. No. I don't think a film that has to introduce the Fantastic Four for the first time, explore and develop their family dynamic for a new audience, and also examine the depth and complexity of the Silver Surfer and his/her/their macabre duty will also have space to properly explore the magnitude and horror that is Galactus.

Galactus deserves better than to be squeezed into the last five minutes for a Super Easy Barely An Inconvenience death.

I disagree. While Galactus can be a suitable Avengers antagonist, he's also perfectly serviceable as a one-off Fanrastic Four antagonist. Thats kinda what the Fantastic Four do. The characters can always come back later to show their depths.

Either way, he likely isn't getting more than one movie of screentime unless he has a returning role. Same for the Silver Surfer.

Wouldn’t it be a surprise to casual audiences if there was a Fantastic Four movie where the Silver Surfer was an ally and then at the end went to meet Galactus to say “you’ve got to see this delicious planet I happened to find”

Aside from that, you could do Galactus as a one movie thing if you play it like some later Galactus stories where coming and threatening to eat Earth is just a pretext for some other problem

Also, a second film teasing the appearance of Galactus, but never getting to him would leave me pretty sour.
