Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

They could do a Captain America thing and CGI the actor to their normal human physique, since She-Hulk is a far more normal size than Hulk himself. Unless they decide to make this version a lot more buff, a bodybuilder could definitely play her hulk form with little to no CGI. Also might depend on how much control she has over transforming, if she's usually going to be in one form, that's the one the real actor should look like.

I missed the part where that's my problem.

"They could do a Captain America thing and CGI the actor to their normal human physique,"

I have a better idea, to hire a woman of average constitution for Jennifer and and hire another actress for She-Hulk.

The CGI for the Captain was necessary because he was exaggeratedly thin, but Jennifer is of normal constitution.

"She-Hulk is a far more normal size than Hulk himself"

The word "normal size" is a relative term, she continues to be more than 7 feet tall.

Do you think they'll use CGI or copious amounts of green body paint for Shulkie?

Wake me up at your own risk.

With the prevalence of mo-cap and CGI it would be simple to find a normal sized actress and then mo-cap her for She-Hulk.

I mean they didn't get two actors for the MCU Hulk, Mark plays both characters wearing mo-cap for his Hulk scenes.

Why do you need two actresses for She-Hulk? Find one who can play Jennifer then Mo-Cap to transform her into She-Hulk.

[up][up]CG most likely. No one wants to be covered in gallons of paint like Ferrigno was.

The Mo-Cap route is just rather expensive for a tv show, but given Disney's logistic of simply throwing billions of dollars at every Disney+ tv show they feel worthy, that shouldn't provide a problem.

[up]*4 If they decide to continue with the route of making She-Hulk 7 feet tall, it would be CGI.

If they put her 6 feet or less, I guess they would just take a muscular woman and paint her green.

[up] Yup, the various PTB have stated that the Production quality and budgets for the Marvel Series will be on par with the Movies (since they will be more tightly tied to the Movies) so the idea of a Mo-Cap for She-Hulk isn't too out there.

I imagine that if they follow the 7-foot She-Hulk route, the She-Hulk version will only appear as 5 minutes per episode. While the rest of the time would be Jennifer.

In the comics, Jennifer is in her she-hulk form most of the time, but in the comics, writers and cartoonists just have to worry about having enough green paint.

[up]It was a key plot point in the comics they’re adapting the law partners didn’t want Jennifer in Hulk form in the office.

You could, for ambition's sake, go the The Matrix route and film the scenes of Jen Walters and She-Hulk months apart to give the actress time to bulk up significantly, but that is again more ambitious and possibly risky for the actress depending how many scenes of each there are (as rapid switches between regular body weights and highly muscular are not good for your health).

Worth noting is the green paint route is much more advanced that it was in Lou's day, as the standard now is Gamora or Nebula or Drax, who were achieved with makeup.

[up][up] Maybe the new CEO will insist that if Sony wants to make MCU-adjacent movies, they'll have to have a fact-checker to retain consistency with MCU lore.

(Since promo stuff for Morbius dates to 2020 when the MCU is at 2023 as of the end of Far From Home.)

According to Tom Holland, he really would like to appear in WandaVision and Sony apparently had an idea to transfer Spider-Man out of the MCU...

Sometimes I wish Tom Holland would just shut up about details concerning Sony.

I keep thinking at some point Sony execs are just gonna say "We're tired of Holland thoughtlessly painting us in a bad light. Drop him immediately!"

Before we start going down the wrong road here, it's important to note that what he actually said was that during the time that it looked like Sony and Marvel were done last year there was an actual plan to keep Holland's Spidey without the MCU connection (rather than Sony going off the cuff, like a lot of people thought) - before they changed things when the two companies started playing ball again, and that Holland thought that plan was a good one.

Huh we may have some leaks about the plot for the first episode of the Winter Falcon & the appearance of a character with enormous implications for the MCU. Gonna post this as a direct link cause the thumbnail can be considered a spoiler.

Omega Red may be appearing.

Of course take this all with a grain of salt.
