Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Marvel Studios' Spider-Man 3 (title obviously not final) is looking to start filming this summer in Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Iceland.

Apparently, some see Iceland as a potential stand-in for Russia, which means Kraven the Hunter.

Do films use Iceland as a stand-in for Russia or is it all speculation?

I wonder if Nebula was the right Guardian of the Galaxy to stay alive after the Snap. If Quill had stayed alive instead, he could just as well have provided the location of Morag, without the entanglement thing with 2014 Nebula putting 2014 Thanos on their trail (of course the movie would have been half as interesting, but I'm taking the Watsonian point of view here).

Then again, given that Quill in Infinity War & Engdame has become the MCU equivalent of Robin in Teen Titans Go! (I can't believe I'm referencing that show), he would probably have found a way to screw things up. For one thing, Stark and him on the same ship for a month would have probably ended with at least one of them thrown out of an airlock.

Nebula was the only other person to know about Vormir after Gamora and Thanos, so that’s why she was essential.

So they needed a universe where Scott (who provided the means) Tony (who made those means viable) Natasha (who's sacrifice allowed them to get one of the stones they needed) Steve (who's faith in Tony was vital when it seemed things went off the rails), Nebula (who kept Tony alive and cause past Gamora's Heel–Face Turn) and probably Carol (who brought Tony and Nebula back which allowed their respective actions).

Anyone else I'm missing here?

Don't forget that one rat that freed Scott by accident.

Disgusted, but not surprised

[up][up] Drat. Forgot about that.

I'd say that Peter Parker also needed to die during the Snap. His memory seems to be one of the major reasons motivating Stark to work on the time machine after all.

No, Nebula mentions Vormir to Peter when they are fighting Thanos. "He took her to Vormir. He came back with the Soul Stone...but she didn't." Nebula herself didn't know about Vormir until Gamora revealed it to Thanos.

Oh right.

No, Nebula mentions Vormir to Peter when they are fighting Thanos. "He took her to Vormir. He came back with the Soul Stone...but she didn't." Nebula herself didn't know about Vormir until Gamora revealed it to Thanos.

Oh right. But Quill lost it seconds later. He might not even remember that part.

Plus, does he even know where Vormir is...? Come to think of it, how did Nebula know where it was?

I suppose it was well enough documented in the star charts that it was easy to find based on its name alone.

Which makes me wonder, did we get an idea on how large the known universe is in Avengers? I did not pay particularly attention to the distances referenced (if there were any). Did the characters talk about going to different galaxies, for instance?

The Nine Realms are supposed to be in separate galaxies and are connected by Yggdrasil. I think most other cosmic stuff is contained entire within the same galaxy.

Technically, Felicia appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 where she was played by Felicity Jones, but she never became the Black Cat in that movie.

I think the biggest tragedy to come out of the cancellation Marvel's Netflix shows is that Luke Cage (I think) won't be getting a third season.

Season 2 ends on SUCH a downer.

So, one of the villains in the show is super obscure. Super obscure from Marvel comics, or super obscure from the MCU? If the former, it could be anything from Stilt-Man to the Fake Captain America we've all been theorizing is the main villain. If the latter, I'm betting on Baron Von Strucker making a comeback.

Ghost and Bucky both being co-victims of HYDRA experiments is a rather popular Fanon that I personally adore, and I'm excited to see what they'd do with it in canon.

Baron Von Strucker making a comeback would be piss-easy. This is comic books we're talking about. And if you don't want to bring him back, you could make a more comic-book accurate Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker the father or grandfather of the one we've seen.

I mean, they had his kid in Agents of SHIELD, but who knows if they're going to honor that.

I wouldn't mind a retcon there anyways. The MCU wasted Strucker's entire line. That said, I wouldn't call Strucker obscure.

On the other hand, the tweet didn't say the villain was obscure, it said the villain was "way back on the shelf." Which could mean anything from they're not well known to that they're well known but have been on the backburner or unused.

The fact that they expect people to be hype about it suggests the latter more than the former.
