Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think it's less them wanting to fix everything than wanting them to at least be seen as fighting for it. The shutdown outcome was terrible optics in that regard.
These last couple of years have made me very weary of the word "optics". Along with "identity politics", "fake news", etc.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI agree it is obnoxious, but if we had two sane parties then funding health insurance for children wouldn't be a bargaining chip.
Agreed, but thems the times we're living in.
In the public's eye, the Dems lost the shutdown. That's just the case. And in terms of votes and approval ratings, how people feel apparently matters more than the truth.
Speaking of which, what's the scuttlebutt on the memo's reception? I live in DC so everyone I know knew it was nothing from the word go, but is Fox being successful in convincing people it meant anything or are they sweeping it under the rug?

It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.Fox is screaming at whoever will listen that this is undeniable proof the FBI is out to get Trump. So far it seems only their base is affected.
Even people like Gowdy are saying it should have zero impact on Mueller's work, and Republicans in the Senate are saying that releasing it at all was a mistake.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Re: That Neo-Nazi running for office in Illinois: Like M84, maybe I should change my signature to read "Out of the woodwork" and just point to it over and over. Thanks, Trump!

I could be wrong but this isn't something that feels very spinnable, even if someone doesn't read it (like most people) it was released and the universal media consensus is that it was a giant nothingburger. I just can't see the Right Wing Media being able to convince significant numbers of people outside of their cultist audience.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnWasn't it today that Mcconnell promised they'd have a DACA resolution? I don't see anything about it so is there going to be a Shutdown 2.0?

I thought it was 2/8.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe above is correct, the vote isn't until the 8th... As is Shutdown 2.0.
How long do you think it takes him to come up with these nicknames?
And Rep. Adam Schiff's response is great.
Actually the Americans people would prefer if he fired Pence, appointed Biden V.P and then promptly went into a coma .
Probably not long. Like, really? "Little Adam Schiff"? That's the best you could come up with?

It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.Shocking news, guys. Turns out Trump and Sarah Huckabee Sanders lied about something.
In this case, A Freedom of Information Act request for documents supporting Trump's lie about "Oh yeah, I fired Comey because everyone in the FBI hated him. Totally" revealed that there's... literally nothing supporting Trump's claim. And in fact paints the exact opposite picture.
This hasn't really shown up elsewhere yet and I personally don't know this "Lawfare Blog" but they seem reputable.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnI keep looking at Jones' political positions and I can't help but wonder where they are digging up people like this?
Care to elaborate?
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnArthur Jones, an outspoken Holocaust denier, among other things, running for a Congressional seat in Illinois

Yeah, let's not forget there's a Democratic Senator named Doug Jones now, so it behooves us to be more specific.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWhen I first saw the story my mind went to Roy Moore, and the use of Jones alone here made me need to double check I was thinking of the right thing. Now I'm imagining the RNC trying to figure out what went wrong in Alabama and deciding the issue had to have been the voters preferred the name "Jones" to "Moore" and are now trying to exploit that.
Lord knows they've used stranger logic than that.
Good use of The Blues Brothers reference

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -Hylarnx6 'Dug up' nothing; Arthur's been running for years, but he hasn't ever gotten the Nomination. Because he's the only Republican running in that District this year, though, he's automatically the winner.

I'm not going to worry until we see how the special election in Pennsylvania go, and even then, a Republican Victory to me won't mean that it's going to suck for Dems come November. It might mean a lesser wave, but I don't see how Republicans can hold onto the House at this point.
