The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[lol][lol][lol] @ that New York Times article.

Does some areas need to move to the center? Of course, there's no disputing that. But a complete move to the center, unilaterally?

HELL, nah.

This whole one-size fits all fallacy is straight trash. Dems are nowhere even close to as a monolith as the GOP is (and even then, there are in-fighting factions in the GOP), so any strategy that's not tailored to the specifc state and/or district is just asking for massive losses.

[up] Isn't that what happened to Ossof?

[up]It's rather difficult to say so due to the long-shot nature of Ossoff's campaign.

You might as well argue that Republican carpetbaggers are still more accepted by the Georgian Sixth than Democratic ones, even if the Republican is further away.

What happened to Ossof was that the district was too red for a Democrat to win. And people oversold the Trump factor - even if you consider him a tosser, you may still win in a congressional election.

I mostly just remember one issue mention with Ossof being he focused too much on being Not-Trump and Anti-Trump in an area where that wasn't the right strategy.

[up]This was due to polling saying that the voters there identified more as Republican voters than Trump voters (yes, I have to dig it up too).

Unfortunately for Ossof, despite the Ossof campaign's best efforts to encourage turnout among Democratic voters, there were still enough Republican voters for Handel to win.

Another thing Ossof campaigned on was bipartisanship and "connecting people". Bipartisanship always works best to the voters' eyes when it's your representative working with the other side, not vice versa.

I still think that the special elections losses, in districts that are historically blood red, aren't a sign of a looming disaster, and the swing trend is promising. If the Democrats start losing swing (or god forbid blue leaning) districts, then you can start to panic suggest a serious change in policy.

We start losing blue districts, I'm making good on finishing my application to New Zealand I started a few years back.

At that point, the country isn't even worth saving.

Ah, yes, moving to the center sounds exactly like what everyone who's not a middle class white dude wants, and not a clusterfuck guaranteed to justify the tone of insufferable "well, really what's the difference between the parties dude" bothaiderism that I hear from people on all ends of the political spectrum.

There was a brief period after the election where you saw Sanders rhetoric (and that of numerous other policymakers) edging towards some of the positions expressed in this article; ie the democrats need to move to the center on social issues, however that's largely vanished as of late, thanks in no small part I suspect to the vigorous response by the left to that suggestion.

Social justice and economic justice are, in the long term, inseparable, and attempting to pursue one at the expense of the other will come back to haunt the party in the long term.

I keep seeing people pushing for that every so often, though it's fair to say that rhetoric (with the exception of idiots like the article's writer) is starting to die down, finally. And I completely agree with the second paragraph.

@Link To The Future and Tactical Fox: Agreed. We just have to make sure that "holding the center" is the pushing policies that make sense and are helpful instead of running further towards the right because the middle ground is pushed right by the GOP.

@Matues: snark noted, and yeah, that's why it's such a weird article.

By "hold the center", I mean "don't mindlessly to the left unless we know that a) it will win us elections and/or b) it's some sorely needed policy" it absolutely doesn't mean "we need to move to the right to fill in the gap there"

If No. 45 dies on foreign soil, he gets a full head-of-state ceremonial burial.

Which, in true Trumpian fashion, the other guys will pay for. And it will be followed by a months-long debate over whether the funeral procession was the most-attended ever.

@Luigisan: Did you miss the part where he said that his plan to immigrate to New Zealalnd would only be implemented if the Democrat Party ends up losing currently blue (i.e. Dem-leaning) districts in upcoming Congressional elections? I know you're stubbornly a Wide-Eyed Idealist about the whole situation, but this takes the cake.
