Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, Libertarians are all about free speech so long as it isn't speech they disagree with.
Not to mention literally sexualizing guns is actual grooming of kids.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.RE: FEMA camps. I find it fascinating what bits of fiction trickle into conspiracy theory. ICR was it Deus Ex or the X Files that put forward the claim that FEMA and CDC have power to declare an emergency in a way that overrides democratic control. But Adrenochrome as seen in the Q Anon theories is squarely lifted from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
the statement above is falseThere is a question I kinda wanna ask about Libertarians, but I'm sure it'll just be a big ol' can of worms.
I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting AgencyThen either ask the question or don't, it's kind of weird to pop in to say "I have a question but I'm not going to ask it actually."
Anyway I'm sure someone in the thread has a kind of answer, whatever the question is, so ask away. It's not like it'll derail the thread or anything. At worst it could probably be taken to the general politics thread if it goes too deep into talking about libertarian ideology in general.
So is Trump getting arrested this week or not?
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult. We will see. Unless someone here works for the NY District Attorney we can't know until it hits the news.
"You can reply to this Message!"Some think Trump might have lied about him being arrested just to rile up his base.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.CBS reporter: Steel barricades arriving outside Manhattan Criminal Court.
Little appetite for mass protests among Trumpists. Many saying it's a trap by law enforcement.
"It seems to reduce a lot of people's willingness to make big statements about being willing to go out" and engage in violence, he said.
Hooray for criminal deterrence?
"What a century this week has been." - Seung Min KimAccording to Trump, the arrest will happen tommorrow.
But it's not clear if this is a real thing, or if he's just reciting some conspiracy wankery that he heard somewhere.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Is this a case of their own conspiracy theories biting them in the ass? I recall hearing "January 6th was entrapment" at some point.
Congratulations, they played themselves?
"In a move surprising absolutely no one"The reporting we’ve had from sources other than Trump has spoken not about an arrest (literal handcuffs and a cell) but an indictment (the formal charging with a criminal offence). Trump is unlikely to know the difference between the two.
An indictment would make sense with Trump knowing in advance, as when white-collar criminals are indicted they generally get advance notice and do it with an appointment and everything.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranHasn't Trump already been indicted?
Not as far as we're aware.
Gotta love their own paranoia sending them away from any "call to action", even the barricade on Mar-a-Lago thread looks stupid when things like the Waco siege turned out to not be in favor of the crazies.
They also really overplay how many fucks anyone would give if the FBI just drive a mil surplus APCs or MRA Ps on top of the "barricade", if they decide that overweight and unfit keyboard warriors with Walmart AR-15s try do do anything.

“He has a battle rifle”: Police feared Uvalde gunman’s AR-15
In previously unreleased interviews, police who responded to the Robb Elementary shooting told investigators they were cowed by the shooter’s military-style rifle. This drove their decision to wait for a Border Patrol SWAT team to engage him, which took more than an hour.

“You knew that it was definitely an AR,” Uvalde Police Department Sgt. Donald Page said in an interview with investigators after the school shooting. “There was no way of going in. … We had no choice but to wait and try to get something that had better coverage where we could actually stand up to him.”
“We weren’t equipped to make entry into that room without several casualties,” Uvalde Police Department Detective Louis Landry said in a separate investigative interview. He added, “Once we found out it was a rifle he was using, it was a different game plan we would have had to come up with. It wasn’t just going in guns blazing, the Old West style, and take him out.”
Uvalde school district Police Chief Pete Arredondo, who was fired in August after state officials cast him as the incident commander and blamed him for the delay in confronting the gunman, told investigators the day after the shooting he chose to focus on evacuating the school over breaching the classroom because of the type of firearm the gunman used.
“We’re gonna get scrutinized (for) why we didn’t go in there,” Arredondo said. “I know the firepower he had, based on what shells I saw, the holes in the wall in the room next to his. … The preservation of life, everything around (the gunman), was a priority.”
None of the officers quoted in this story agreed to be interviewed by the Tribune.
On separate news, Time have written an interesting article about how Postmaster General Louis De Joy has been having a redemption arc. Specifically being a key player in generating Republican support for Biden’s postal reform and in helping the service modernise. This seems to have come about due to him have gone native and developed a loyalty to the postal service, him having developed a positive relationship with the postal unions, him wanting the service to work rather than to starve the beast, and him not wanting his legacy to be his connection to Trump. It’s an interesting read[1]

"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranWell I guess that's going in my top 10 anime plot twists for the year.
@Beary Scary: If you have an honest question, ask it, and let the worms crawl where they may.
I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.We need more political anime and manga, honestly.

"In a move surprising absolutely no one"So with Trump looking to be indicted and De Santis basically throwing him under the bus, I wonder how Trump is feeling? Maybe he learned some lessons. Let's check his Truth Social.
"Ron Desanctimonious will probably find out about FALSE ACCUSATIONS & FAKE STORIES sometime in the future, as he gets older, wiser, and better known, when he's unfairly and illegally attacked by a woman, even classmates that are "underage" (or possibly a man!). I'm sure he will want to fight these misfits just like I do!"
yep
"Maybe he learned some lessons"
No he has not. He doesn't want to and he never will.

The criminal background checks?
One thing he was worried about was drug dealers.
There was also the COVID epidemic. One of his tenants was apparently the son of a well-to-do family and had a decent job, and was able to weasel out of paying anyways. He had to be paid a very large amount of money to agree to leave.
The epidemic is over now, but he's still terrified that his local government won't sympathize if he has another troublesome tenant. He claims that there's been talk of severely restricting the conditions under which evictions can be made.
