The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The first year I have to be reminded my birthday coincides with the anniversary of an insurrection.

Fucking yay.

I don't think Mc Connell wants a violent coup either. Not when his working within the letter of the law works well enough. He seems way too careful to countenance actually breaking the law.

I also don't see Republicans trying to impeach Biden over nothing substantial, though I suppose anything seems possible these days. They probably figure they can cheat their way to victory anyway without burning their hands on a bogus impeachment.

Optimism is a duty.

What’s this based on? As Cruz has just said that they will do exactly that.

Cruz isn't a leadership figure, though. Evil Turtle is.

Also, this isn't the first time we've seen this song and dance - back in the Obama era many House Republicans wanted to impeach Obama for Benghazi etc. but Boehner and Ryan prevented them from doing so, because they were afraid that a doomed-to-fail impeachment effort would politically damage them.

No, but shit clumps together and they'll probably enjoy shrieking about how this is no different from the "baseless" impeachment proceedings for Trump.

Knowing the day-glo bastard, he'll probably insist that his cult attempt to impeach every Democratic President who ever comes after him now.

It's been fun.

[up][up]Yeah but Cruz isn't just one Senator, he's a spineless snake he who has thoroughly ingratiated himself into the dominant Republican zeitgeist.

If nothing else his words suggest that the Trumpist types will be pushing for it, whether the leadership capitulates is less clear but it's not at all justified to act as if it's just him.

Precisely.

The guy is the definition of Quisling.

On a Side note, per NBC, and also covered in last night's Late Show, Peter Navarro revealed that the Republicans actually had their plan fucked over to contest the election BY the Mob they sent over to contest the election.

To use Colbert's turn of phrase: "And We would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for that meddling mob! Damn you, Scooby-Coup!"

[up]x3 That's a scary thought. Imagine if the attempted insurrection and riots hadn't happened, everyone stayed outside and just shouted a lot, and the GOP inside were able to go through with contesting certain states and throw the election to Trump.

Not that I'm happy the attempted insurrection and riots happened, mind you. Neither should've. In a sane world, where the GOP hadn't gone off the deep end, counting the votes would've been largely procedural. But thanks to Trump's Big Lie, that is not a guarantee anymore.

BTW, while he didn't have the press conference today, he still sent out a statement touting the Big Lie again. On 1/6. Horrendous.

I doubt they would've succeeded (I don't think they had enough votes), but it just would've put legitimacy on their efforts.

I do enjoy the irony, though.

Republicans could have done a better job of attempting to steal the election FOR Trump, if Trump and his stupid stupid MAG Atards could have just been patient.

All the House Republicans are avoiding the vigil to remember 1/6 and honor the police officers who fought the insurrectionists, with the exception of Liz Cheney. Dick Cheney is also there.

Speaking of them, it's a good idea to remember Heroism shown that day: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_Goodman_(police_officer)

But, as his old unit, the 101st Airborne said: "Eugene was a hero long before January 6th."

They also had this to say about him on Twitter as well:

"Eugene Goodman represents everything good about us.

He is everything good about us.

He is what we stand for, and what we’ve stood for since 1942."

He's occasionally bashed Trump for being too soft on Russia and China (comparing his foreign policy to Obama's) and for Tweeting out his random thoughts as policy statements.

Eh, more that we've reached the point where Dick Cheney has retained more of the pre-Trump Republican veneer of respectability than his colleagues.

Which to be clear, is still only a veneer.

Imagine if the attempted insurrection and riots hadn't happened, everyone stayed outside and just shouted a lot, and the GOP inside were able to go through with contesting certain states and throw the election to Trump.

They didn’t have the votes for it even if they had had the votes for it they would have then faced a serious risk of violence breaking out from such an obvious coup, even if it had succeeded.

That’s part of why I don’t expect Republicans to actually go full coup, because coup’s are bloody affairs and even people on the winning side die.
