Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Which is still dumb as fuck like every other law on that list, yet sadly the one most likely to get the courts to do any thing.
Yeah this is “Target gun makers for the actions of gun smugglers” the same way the Texas law is “Target Uber drivers for the actions of women getting abortions”.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranRegarding the French submarine affair. This Twitter feed has a somewhat different view on the French affair - that it's primarily a fallout of bad US strategic decisions regarding European policy [namely, pretending to care about European strategic priorities while hindering European military integration?] that boiled over at this seemingly minor thing.
However, I don't know if any of this is reliable.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe Texas voting law seems to be so little talked about now that I'm starting to suspect they deliberately passed the abortion law right after to change the subject.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Yeah, the US torpedoing a French deal like that seems like a shitty move coming from an ally.
Optimism is a duty.My (admittedly very limited) understanding is that both the Texas Supreme Court and the 5th Court of Appeals favor Republicans and have overturned lower court rulings in favor of voting rights. So I'm leaning towards not, though it's not impossible.
Cumbre Vieja on La Palma has erupted. The one that could cause a megatsunami.
People living on the east coast should start feeling very nervous right about now. For that matter, everyone living around the Atlantic should.

Optimism is a duty.Blech. Here's a Wikipedia page and please consider that eruptions are way more common than tsunamis.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIf it happens, it will be very relevant, I imagine.
Maybe a new thread?

Optimism is a duty.La Palma will not cause an tsunami from just a simple eruption, much less a mega tsunami. There have been 8 eruptions since the Spanish have started keeping records there and likely many more since the last time it caused a mega tsunami over 500 thousand years ago.
The time to worry is if an eruption causes a landslide into the Atlantic. Then is the time for a Mass "Oh, Crap!" for anyone on the coast of the north Atlantic.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Is this more Rebublican grandstanding, or would they really do it?

They say they will do it every time this comes up. What I don't understand is how they expect to win the vote without someone like Manchin or Sinema defecting.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Have they ever signed a paper explicitly saying they won't raise the debt ceiling before?
Some such was attempted during Obama's terms. I don't recall if it was a physical document, but a pact was made... and then broken.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Paper is just paper.
Why does it feel like, even though the Republicans lost the presidency and the Senate, they still won overall?
The last few weeks have brought that doomscrolling feeling back.
I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting AgencyBecause the budget deadline is coming up and this happens every year. At this point it's literally seasonal.
The ultimate question is whether or not they think they can blame the democrats for any of their shenanigans. When they tried this stuff in Trump's term it tended to backfire, iirc.
Because being a problem requires no effort and actually solving problems does.
I'm hearing that the Senate Parliamentarian has ruled that Immigration-related topics are not proper for Reconciliation. Meaning that our one realistic chance to fix Immigration and save the Dreamers is dead.
At this point, Schumer dismisses this Parliamentarian and replaces her with someone who will actually work with the Democrats, or the Reconciliation is just gonna keep getting chipped away and chipped away until it's nothing but the same as the Infrastructure Bill already passed in the Senate...
Or we eliminate the filibuster, which is why the Parliamentarian has all this power to begin with. And realistically it's hard to see how immigration reform is a budgetary measure except by a major stretching of words.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Sounds like just because we don't like the ruling doesn't mean it's incorrect.
Allowing NY citizens to bring suit against gun manufacturers when their products are smuggled in isn't telling them "apprehend smugglers".
It's "sue the manufacturer every time you have any evidence this gun shouldn't be here".
