The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even with a mute button, do you really think that would stop Trump? He'd just be yelling louder to be heard.

Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.

It would be kind of amusing to see him yelling angrily while muted.

Biden seemed quite shaken up early on, like he didn't quite prepare and was doing the mental equivalent of scrambling for his cue cards, but he definitely pulled through down the line. Helps that Trump kept falling further and further. (Some of the stuff he was saying was borderline Chewbacca Defense - Biden won't respond to an irrelevant accusation? Clearly it must be true!)

I can't wait for the debates to turn into UFA fights.

Of course they will be people that will still defend Trump (looking at you /pol/), and will think that the debate was a elaborate hoax set up by Biden to slander Trump.

I watched the debate with my father and stepfather. My stepfather said he didn't like both candidates, but thought it was funny when Trump insulted Biden, but thought it looked bad when Biden insulted Trump.

Wow. Given an easy opportunity to call out white supremacists, egged on, and still couldn't do it.

The worst part was when Trump egged on the question "Who should I denounce?" in a mocking manner, he calls out the Proud Boys by name on his admission, but didn't denounce them at all.

Finally, he told them to "stand by".

Trump officially supports domestic terrorism. Just wow. I almost have the impression that he was looking for a chance to kill Biden during the debate.

The scary thing is I could actually see some logic in what Trump was telling Biden. He drew attention to the issues that the far left criticizes Biden for, and Biden's so focused on appealing to the right that he's forgetting how many left-wing people may sit out the election altogether if he doesn't consider their concerns. Trump mentioning Bernie was a nasty trick - even if Bernie's fans know not to vote for Trump, it still plants the seed of disdain for Biden in their head and further divides the party.

Biden needs to get his act together if he wants to secure his base. I want him to secure his base. But his base is probably more divided than Trump's and that means more work to address all the concerns.

I just got directed to this thread for thinking the debates would count as So Bad, It's Horrible over a tiff regarding the tax codes. Just goes to show you shouldn't trope under the influence, especially of emotion.

Anyway... I just finished watching the debate on PBS, and I think Biden did a better job of professionalism than Trump. Plus, at least someone from Fox News still knows what "fair and balanced" means. I actually feel sorry for Chris Wallace after what he endured tonight.

So the token Republican on CNN was former Senator Rick Santorum, and even he wasn't defending Trump's performance and all but said he lost because he went "too hard".

Another pundit raised the possibility that the Trump campaign will back out of future debates to prevent a repeat.

I'm sorry but if Trump calling a literal hate group to arms doesn't motivate people to vote for Biden, I don't know want to say to them.

That said, I don't think its possible to argue that Trump came out on top tonight, he appealed to no one but his hardcore base with that performance.

Must be a fun night to be an endangered Republican Senator. I wonder how concerned Collins will be tomorrow morning?evil grin

Like, not any more than we were before? Trump was a dumpster fire tonight, and Biden clearly came out looking far better to anyone that's not already drinking the Trumpade.

So on a scale of 1 to death, how fricked are we?

We're in a good place for two major reasons.

1) Trump didn't get the win he desperately needed:

Trump has had some really horrible polling, he needed a win to knock away Biden's lead. Suffice to say a debate that he turned into a garbage fire isn't the way to do that. Chaos at best just makes everyone look bad, it doesn't actually help him.

2) Biden tacitly confirmed that he would be open to abolishing the filibuster and adjusting the court:

If the filibuster remains and the Court keeps a Conservative supermajority then nothing will get done and we'll be fucked. But if the former is abolished and the latter edited then we actually have a chance to do something. By choosing not to stand against it Biden showed that he is willing to have an administration that may actually accomplish something.

In the meantime, The Los Angelos Times is one of the earliest outlets to release a fact-check run-through of the debate.

CNN's Jake Tapper is calling the debate "a hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck.”

Vox also released an article highlighting Trump's adverse relationship with moderator Chris Wallace.

Not too many pieces on the debate as of yet, but this one from the New York times ends with an interesting observation:

Two more matchups are scheduled between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden, and the next moderator assigned to maintain control will be a TV personality known less for jousting with lawmakers than listening, quietly and attentively, to rambling on-air callers: Steve Scully of C-SPAN.

The message from Tuesday night: good luck.

White Supremacist and Far-Right groups are already using "Stand Back and Stand By" as a new motto.

Biden needs to declare some of these terrorist groups when he gets in.
