Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Kansas could also be in play as apparently the Republican governor nominee who lost in 2018 is looking to be the senate candidate, and he’s hated in the state.

Also Alabama depends on who the Republican candidate is.

Georgia is the big longshot, the Republicans only held it in 2018 by massive voter removal, if that can be fought it might well be competitive, that’s 16 electoral votes and 2 senate seats.

Potentially good news: A survey suggests black voters are overall more invested in voting in 2020 (compared to 2016) because of Trump.

Somewhat related to the earlier conversation about economics and minorities, according to the poll only 22% of the people who answered it felt that their personal finances have improved in the last two years. So the relatively good economy in the US seems to be only mildly benefiting black americans, which I'm sure will surprise no one.

Another interesting point is that less than half (45%) of people consulted lived in larger cities, the others are in suburbs, rural areas, and smaller towns.

Suburbs used to be a pretty good voting base for the GOP. After 2016, not so much. It's the reason why the Dems were able to take Congress.

As it turns out, there's a difference between being a social conservative and being a Reactionary from the bad old days.

Funny thing is, older Black Voters tend to be more or less as conservative as older White Voters. But hey, how many of them are going to vote Republican, given the outcome of the Southern Strategy and the Dixiecrat swing? (EDIT: This is a Rhetorical Question, but feel free to answer it if you think the premise is wrong!)

It's oft been noted that the GOP would perform remarkably well with immigrants and minorities, especially older ones, if it weren't completely married to white supremacy.

Of note, they had a solid grasp on the muslim vote before 9/11 and the ensuing islamaphobia and racism kicked in.

There was an outreach to minorities initially before the Tea Party showed a wellspring of support for the most reactionary racist ideology possible. So the Republicans went all in on it.

Trump didn't give them a reason to back down but I think and this is perhaps my optimism showing that I think they miscalculated and the majority of people are disgusted by him.

[up] They also had a minor attempt to reform when they lost in 2012 (at least the White House and the Senate)... But then all the radio hosts got all pissy that they were changing, and the Tea Partiers ended up taking the Senate in 2014. Trump's victory in the Primary sealed the Republican Parties fate to be the party of White Nationalism, one that will give them less and less power as time moves forward (as we saw in 2018, and hopefully in 2020).

After Trump won, I focused on hating Republicans so that I didn't slip into hating Americans in general.

4 years later, I realize that they are just that evil and unworthy of pity, not just a useful hate sink.

National Archives exhibit blurs images critical of President Trump

The Archives acknowledged in a statement this week that it made multiple alterations to the photo of the 2017 Women's March showcased at the museum, blurring signs held by marchers that were critical of Trump. Words on signs that referenced women’s anatomy were also blurred.

In the original version of the 2017 photograph, taken by Getty Images photographer Mario Tama, the street is packed with marchers carrying a variety of signs, with the Capitol in the background. In the Archives version, at least four of those signs are altered.

A placard that proclaims "God Hates Trump" has "Trump" blotted out so that it reads "God Hates." A sign that reads "Trump & GOP — Hands Off Women" has the word Trump blurred out.

Signs with messages that referenced women’s anatomy — which were prevalent at the march — are also digitally altered. One that reads "If my vagina could shoot bullets, it'd be less REGULATED" has "vagina" blurred out. And another that says "This Pussy Grabs Back" has the word "Pussy" erased.

The Archives said the decision to obscure the words was made as the exhibit was being developed by agency managers and museum staff members. It said David S. Ferriero, the archivist of the United States who was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009, participated in talks regarding the exhibit and supports the decision to edit the photo.

Andrew Jackson, a literal murderer who defied the Supreme Court so he could commit genocide and deliberately wrecked the banking system, is on the $20 bill. He’s been there since 1928.

[up] It's definitely supposed to be irony, as Jackson despised the idea of a National Bank (as most Southerners did), so much so that he killed the Second National Bank of the US which caused the first true Depression in the USA (under his successor, Martin Van Buren).

The problem is, the Irony ignored all the terrible things Jackson did in life, and his simply being on a thing he hated (a currency regulated by the Federal Government) is no where near good enough punishment for what he did.

I shit you not, TRUMP IS STILL INVOLVED IN THIS.

Because Andrew Jackson was going to be replaced with Harriet Tubman on the 20 Dollar Bill.

Until it was....drum roll...vetoed by Trump.

Did he veto out of genuine admiration for Jackson (clearly he was an inspiration :V) or just because white supremacy?

This is a case where the Mathematician's Answer might actually be true.

There's probably a considerable amount of overlap between white supremacists and Jackson fans anyway, given Jackson's record.

There's probably some overlap between Jackson fans and lolbertarians too given Jackson's hatred of banks. And maybe overlap between Jackson fans and anti-Semites for the same reason.

White supremacists and lolbertarians and anti-Semites, oh my.

Trump claims an admiration for Jackson who cared nothing for courts and ruled as a dictator.

He also overtly stated that he found the idea of honoring Harriet Tubman to be "political correctness gone mad."
