The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm not sure how else to react to, "Judge rules Trump needs to turn over taxes. It goes to higher court. Will eventually end up in his court."

On the contrary, every success against Trump is building up to a victory, you just have to wear down his physical and magic armour enough..

Yeah, that's right.

Whatever Stand he's using, it's not invincible.

The trick is to be persistent about it, and keep things simple so the public have it easy to understand.

Just hoping he won't act out of spite in regards to his tax-returns when no other option for him exists...

Most of what I was going to say has been rendered superfluous but there is one point to make that I don't think has been made, Trump being forced to give out his tax returns doesn't matter that much. It's not irrelevant and if nothing else the symbolism matters but practically when it comes to constraining Trump's power it's not high impact.

Rather, what matters is impeachment and the election in 2020. So even if Trump giving out his tax returns was 100% impossible it wouldn't be a particularly significant victory for Trump.

I thought we had long accepted we weren't getting those tax returns.

So Trump just Tweeted this. And this is an exact, copy-pasted quote.

As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!). They must, with Europe and others, watch over...

....the captured ISIS fighters and families. The U.S. has done far more than anyone could have ever expected, including the capture of 100% of the ISIS Caliphate. It is time now for others in the region, some of great wealth, to protect their own territory. THE USA IS GREAT!

He actually said "my great and unmatched wisdom"....

I think people underestimate the importance of his tax returns given they potentially show he's a financial criminal and could illustrate his ties to foreign dictators, organized crime, and just how badly he's mismanged his financial empire as well as how much he's in the hole save for Russian bailouts.

I'm confused at how that's not incredibly relevant.

If Trump had any self-awareness, you'd think that line about wisdom was sarcasm.

Because there's nothing in there that would surprise anybody. There are three things you can expect to find in Trump's tax returns:

  1. Evidence of white-collar crime. But nobody cares about white-collar crime and no billionaire will ever face real consequences for it, especially not POTUS.
  2. Evidence of Russian ties. But we have a 200-page document extensively detailing Trump's Russian ties. The country is not lacking for proof. It's lacking for f*cks to give. The country has, as a whole, decided that Trump being a Russian asset is okay.
  3. Evidence that Trump isn't really a billionaire. This is almost certainly what Trump is actually trying to hide. But it's also completely trivial and is worth nothing more than a few lulz.

The tax returns are not the magic bullet you're looking for. If anything, the quest for Trump's tax returns is probably actually counterproductive, given that it makes the Democrats' investigations look petty.

We should have dropped this line of investigation in 2017. We have nothing to gain and PR to lose by spending years obsessively demanding Trump's tax returns.

Rudy Giuliani, Trump's Personal Lawyer and a person of interest in the Impeachment against him, plans to sue Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rashid Tliab (D-MI) for 'depriving him of his civil rights' , 'witness tampering', 'conspiracy' and 'inhibition'. While the Headline brings up Trump numerous times (including the title), there is no evidence yet that Trump has anything to do with Giuliani's Stunt (though don't be surprised if he concocted this idea).

All I can really say is I hope this bites Guiliani in his ass; the man has gone off the deep end.

So here's one sure to rile up Trump - a member of the National Security Council told Newsweek that Trump got "rolled" by Turkey, and that he "has no spine".

"President Trump was definitely out-negotiated and only endorsed the troop withdraw to make it look like we are getting something—but we are not getting something," the National Security Council source told Newsweek. "The U.S. national security has entered a state of increased danger for decades to come because the president has no spine and that's the bottom line."

The source also said they expect a Turkish incursion between 24 and 96 hours from the time of speaking.
