The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He has to have committed an actual crime against the country. Just saying stuff isn't illegal, and to prosecute him over what he's said, even if it's to do something else that is illegal, would be a massive violation of the right to free speech. This isn't even yelling fire in a theater; this is just him bloviating about arresting someone. We have a deliberately, and necessarily, high bar for what counts as treason.

[up][up]What does the "US" mean in this context, though? Because I don't think Joe Citizen can just make a suggestion to the Peace Prize guys and be taken seriously.

We should change the national emergency law so that the President can only respond to actual emergencies...

Meanwhile, the most likely outcome right now is that the wall funding gets tied up in the courts for two years, the Republicans lose the Presidential election and/or the Senate in 2020, and the wall money is put back where it belongs...

Not the desired outcome, but that's on Trump.

[up]X5 The US government requested that the Japanese government nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, the US government could have just nominated Trump itself if it really wanted to. The list of people who can nominate is pretty long and I’ll quote it.

  • Members of national assemblies and national governments (cabinet members/ministers) of sovereign states as well as current heads of states
  • Members of The International Court of Justice in The Hague and The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague
  • Members of l’Institut de Droit International
  • Members of the Executive Committee of the international board of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom
  • University professors, professors emeriti and associate professors of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion; university rectors and university directors (or their equivalents); directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes
  • Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
  • Members of the main board of directors or its equivalent of organizations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
  • Current and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee (proposals by current members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after 1 February)
  • Former advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee

So Trump could have had a cabinet member or random congressman nominate him (or done it himself) but instead had the government beg Japan to do it for his ego.

Almost certainly, if every state decided to sue you then their representatives and senators would immediately draft up impeachment proceedings. That level of opposition is only going to end in two ways, either getting voted out of office or removed by the Senate.

I’m assuming this still only blue states, if Arizona or Texas get in on this things will get interesting.

Oh and Roger Stone has published a threat (in the from of an image of the judge with crosshairs over her) against the life of the judge presiding over his case, a threat that I’m seeing it claimed originates from a “deep-State” blog and a Russians new site.

Remember that when Sarah Palin did this against a democrat the democrat ended up getting shot in the head, it’s entirely possible that Stone is trying to inspire someone to assassinate the judge.

In the interest of accuracy, the picture didn't have the crosshairs over the judge. It was in the corner over her head. Still noticeable and the whole thing came with the usual conspiracist diatribe about Clinton, Benghazi, Obama, and you know the rest.

Stone has posted an apology to the judge.

A man died in Border Patrol custody; though considering he apparently had substantial liver and heart issues this one probably isn't their fault.

Yeah, I have to agree - this death seems to have been natural and from what we're reporting, CBP took the appropriate steps to fight it.

And while Bill Weld is completely and utterly doomed, I still wish him well. I'd like there to be a Presidential campaign between him and Gillibrand, for example. While I don't agree with excessive economic deregulation anymore, I can recognize Weld as a man acting in good faith and trying to make the country a better place.

I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.

The only reason Bernie looked good in some of the 2016 primaries is because they were caucus style and the relatively low turnout for those allowed his supporters to distort their actual numbers. I look forward to dealing with them again in much the same way as I look forward to the prospect of a traffic accident making my commute longer.
