Horse and words. Y'know, I've been doing this so long at this point that I keep forgetting when I even started. Makes me kinda glad FIMFic keeps such meticulous track of dates.

I haven't been as up on fanfiction in the last couple years owing to my schedule and original writing projects. Fandom isn't what it was in 2014. Ah well. I suppose that eases some of the pressure and means that, should I write again (if only to finish what I started, and I will finish Book of Friendship) I can do it when the idea strikes and without worrying about urgency.

Of course the fandom isn't what it was in 2015. Yet fanfiction output is still super-high and FIMFiction ain't going anywhere (it just passed 2 billion total words and 900 words are uploaded per minute according to current stats).

If anything, the fanfic community is only going to get stronger after the show ends, because now we become the primary content creators. Just look at how Star Wars' expanded universe worked (considering that was all basically licensed fanfiction) until the Prequels came out.

I'll admit I've sometimes dreaded the inevitability of the site (Fimfic or TV Tropes? Does it matter?) shutting down, but that shouldn't be for a good many years (and the good stuff will get backed up as long as people care, but again, that surely won't be forever...). Then Estee went and gave voice to that fear.

See, there's a website out there called FIM Fetch which backs up everything on fimfiction every so often. And there's also the Fimfiction Archive, which does the same thing in one giant ZIP folder. It's been great for finding stuff that might have been removed.

And yeah, I have a feeling FIMFic and TVTropes aren't going anywhere for decades—if that even happens at all. BronyCon just shot back up to over 10 000 attendees for its final run. While the fandom is slowing down, there's still quite clearly a thirst for the content. As far as TVTropes goes, it's more or less continually fed by all the high-profile media that keeps releasing and there's never going to be a shortage of that.

Fimfiction could always rebrand itself as a general MLP fan-site, allowing it to get traffic for as long as there are enough reasons.

Fandoms rarely die out quickly. Some are active 100+ years after the work has finished. It all depends on how long people care to keep the site up and active. A lot of fanfic archives die down and get lost after 10-15 years.

If the news/leaks about it so far is anywhere even vaguely close to true, Gen 5 is set to recapture at least an initial burst of interest from the broader fanbase, too. So there may even be a small upswing... whenever that happens, I haven't been following the news closely. Just hearing rumours and whatnot.

There’s also the options of fanfiction.net, ao3, and many others.

Maybe gen5 will be rad. Especially if they build off of the lessons of fim and other ‘girly’ shows that came out since, like Steven Universe, She-Ra, and Hilda.

Last time I checked Asylum hasn't updated since 2016. It was one of my favorite FIM fics, but it always seemed likely to end up a Dead Fic due to its length.

I wouldn't mind if Fimfiction became a general MLP site. There isn't really a core fan-site for MLP fan-works in general. They're scattered here and there. I remember a good G1/G3 fic about a unipeg/alicorn, but I can't remember the website.

Knighty did say years ago that he was trying to rework Fimfic as a general fanfic site that'll allow stories from any fandom. The idea was that there'd be two different urls, fimfiction.net and genfiction.net (or something like that). Both sites would keep stories in the same background database, and your user account would be the same for both sites—basically, browsing the Fimfic url would function the same as browsing the Genfic site with an "only show pony stories" filter permanently on.

No idea if that's still being worked on. But rebranding Fimfic to encourage pony stories from other generations would make perfect sense.

That seems more work than needed. Most people already have their fanfiction site of choice. FF and AO3 are the most popular amongst English writers.

I suspect that might have been him riding the high of the peak of the fandom at the time. From a programming perspective, unless he made the initial design with exactly that in mind, I'd wager it would be a huge headache to follow through on that.

EDIT: Actually, a good example of it for all of us here: remember when they basically had to tear TVTropes apart to upgrade it? Same deal, most likely.

Draft 92 is up.

We talked about this at Bronycon. FIM-Fiction is seeing 900 words per minute uploaded on average, and it's been that way for some time, even post-peak. FIMF ain't going anywhere for a while. I can't see Knighty expanding any time soon, unless the numbers really start to go down.

Double-post, but had a question to ask. I'm looking for badfics featuring the Mane 6 as the primary characters. Hopefully gonna be doing badfic reading panels at Harmony-Con this year, and might have some help acting out the Mane 6 parts, so I wanted to get prepared a little early.

To clarify, I've asked for an E/T panel for the tamer stuff, and an After Dark panel for the particularly over-the-top stuff.

So far, all of apple short's fics look promising. He wrote "The Tail (Get It ;P) of pRince Martin Willis" and he has several other fics that all look like they could be gold, but I'm hoping for more variety than one author if possible.

Maybe try browsing through Pannic's old live blog. I know he found some pretty questionable stuff, though I can't remember what all was which anymore. Not all of it was pony, though, so it might take some extended effort.

So here's an update on my badfic hunt. I'm going to kick off a panel with "pony 9/11", so you know this shit's gonna get good.

I want to be surprised that that exists, but I can't.

Is that literally what it's called? I wouldn't be surprised if it was a not uncommon theme. Aldea Donder's Alicorn (generally well-regarded) had a scene I found a heavy-hoofed 9/11 parallel, but the author indicated that that wasn't the intention at all.

For anyone that likes Pandemic, does anyone like the "shared universe" direction that it's heading? Especially with the dreamwardens?

Stumbled upon Changeling Courtship Rituals recently. Twilight accidentally gets married to Queen Chrysalis due to a Culture Clash on how dating works. Hilarity Ensues. Pretty sure the author literally just said "What is the stupidest pairing in the series, and how can I make it make sense?"

Also started Fallout: Equestria, but not very far yet.
