So, I saw a thread die today. Or rather, disappear. The question is technical, as the reasoning behind a thread's demise is neither here nor there, but anyway:

What happens to them? Does to go totally away, or does it merely vanish from view by the non-staff forum-dwellers? I can see a problem if it totally vanishes, as there could be evidence (for lack of a better word) in the case when a mod or admin type needs to determine punitive measures against members of the fora. If that evidence is gone, then all they have when they look at it before deleting it is copy-paste or their memory. Unless that isn't a concern at all.

Again, this is a what question, not a why, unless there's a why behind the what (coding constraint, whatever).

Apparently the threads deleted by the robot back in November were floating around in some Eddie-only database, but I don't know if that's the case for all deleted threads.

So can he retrieve the Character Threads that were deleted by the bot and put them into files? I'll like to read them.

Are there any threads for appealing thread locks? Off topic.I know, but this thread was the closest I could find to where it would be on topic.

Mods have a button that utterly zaps a thread. Turns it into a very small heap of slightly radioactive ash.

The action that is available short of that option is a lock. If there might be some reason to preserve the thread, even one that may not be immediately obvious to the mod doing the action, they will lock it.

A thread to dispute locks might be useful. Seems unlikely to me, but it might.

But what if that thread gets locked?

At first I didn't realize I needed all this stuff...

Most of the time, if the reason for the lock isn't painfully self-evident, the mod who locks it will put a final post giving the reason. If you want to appeal the lock, you can use the Holler button and give your reasons.

So should I start a new thread for appealing banned threads? Or should we use this one?

If you want to appeal the lock, you can use the Holler button and give your reasons.

There's no reason to have a thread dedicated to appealing thread lockings.

I think it would help to have the people who are appealing for the thread to appeal together, which would be easier if there was a thread for that.

[up][up]I think dontcallmewave has a point there; I mean, P Ms are all well and good, but if there are multiple tropers who want to give their reasons why the thread should or shouldn't be locked it would be easier to have them all in one place where everyone can see what's going on.

The major con for that would be more work for the mods. As it stands now all the hollers go to a mod only board where they can all see it if I understand the system properly. It would be redundant to have a separate thread for people to ask for unlocks when you can just use the holler system.

But it would help the people who want the thread unlocked to disscuss it better.

Speaking about axe-getting, where'd Fast Eddie's "New Forum Feature" thread go?

[up][up][up][up] @chihuahua: I remember reading some moderator's post who stated that deleted threads are indeed gone forever. Another moderator claimed that deleted threads are still there, but restoring any one of them would someow break the forum. No matter what is true, the higher-ups pretty much ignore the hell out of specific requests like yours.

There's a difference between threads that were intentionally deleted and those that were "archived". Do not conflate the two categories.

I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.

An archived thread is simply removed from public viewing, yes? It still exists somewhere, just not where we can get to it, like backed up elsewhere to reduce server space or something. Just guessing here.
