Maybe they go with "Crystal Lake itself is cursed/toxic/"evil"/polluted...etc..." and the water brings out the worst impulses of anyone that ever comes there for a visit.

Which...actually could explain the behaviors the victims participated in before their deaths.

And push anyone with potential suppressed murderous impulses over the edge and engage in killing sprees once their self-restraints have been removed.

Honestly, I really like that theory. It's a better implementation of Camp Crystal Lake than "Jason's only weakness is this one godforsaken lake".

It's been 3000 years…

That is a good explanation. [up][up]

It could also explain so much about Pamela's murderous spree as well. One issue is that Jason is seen killing people outside the lake, so that could nib that theory. Unless the effects still take hold even if the person is away from the camp.

My theory goes with the statement of "The new guy in charge of "Friday 13th" wants to redo the franchise so that Jason never existed in the first place."

Using Crystal Lake's water as source for the murders (and other certain behaviors) would be one way to do it.

(Meaning that Jason did drown in the lake and never came back at all from there... and making coming movies a massive guessing game of "Who is the killer?" while having an arcing plot through the series in regards to uncovering the mystery of the water in Crystal Lake, which gets greatly hampered by the more unhinged murderers killing people who get too close to the truth towards the end and leaving only bits and few fragments of it for the next MC to pick up on in the next turn...)

I can understand creator's rights, but erasing all everything associated with Jason as a pop culture icon is kind of tone deaf.

And I will add, in regards to "Jason killing outside the lake."

"Drink the water once and you are screwed. In more ways than one. Keep drinking it, and the damage becomes permanent, together with the effects."

(And Jason have been exposed to that water from the days he was just a boy, all the way to adulthood, and even past it, with getting drowned in the stuff repeatedly over the years, not to mention potentially drinking it every day when not bathing in it...)

(And yes, Jason is actually my favorite slasher-icon and introduced me to the genre decades ago. Potentially removing him due to some bad movies and change of leadership is not okay in my eyes.)

Okay, that makes loads of sense. And again it makes him into an even more tragic character.

Maybe they go with "Crystal Lake itself is cursed/toxic/"evil"/polluted...etc..." and the water brings out the worst impulses of anyone that ever comes there for a visit.

They kind of went with that in the 1990s novels (Crystal Lake is implied to be a Hell Gate) and the WildStorm comics (the dying shaman of a tribe that was massacred by white settlers cursed the land).

I have a question for Halloween Kills. Since it's going to stream on Peacock, is this movie free or it's premium? Because I'm planning on watching it.

buuuuut Hellraiser isn't a slasher...

...he wrote, with no confidence he himself had not brought up Hellraiser in the thread about slasher films.

Is Doug Bradley coming back?

Fingers crossed.

Hellraiser isn't a slasher but this seemed like the most appropriate thread to bring it up since it's too early to open a thread proper for it. I figured what's the harm?Pinhead's basically slasher-adjacent anyway (and the later movies of the franchise past number 2 do basically become slasher films).

2022's Scream sequel, also titled Scream because I guess that's what people do with sequels now, has a poster.

We're going to have awkwardly disambiguate it when the page is made from the original again.

[up][up] Hey, they always say "go with the flow." So when Halloween (the 2018 one) did it, everyone else gotta get going.

I jest, but Scream 4 is a whopping 11 years old and evidently isn't well-regarded, so it's pretty understandable from an economical perspective to ditch the numbering gimmick. (Also, I was initially puzzled at Paramount distributing this new Scream, but then I was reminded that they made the TV show via MTV.)

Also, having "It's Always Someone You Know" as the tagline is rightfully chilling and fitting since every Ghostface has been someone the protagonist knows.

P.S. Looks like, at the very least, the new SCREAM or Scream 5 as it should be called (geez, talk about a missed opportunity to call it 5CREAM) won't let go of its meta roots.

In some ways the new SCREAM feels like it's digging deeper into the opening scene of SCREAM 2, with fandom as a central element. What are we owed as fans of something, and is it healthy for this to be the default way we engage with our media and entertainment?

Marketing the fifth Scream movie as 5CREAM is different from marketing the fourth Scream movie as SCRE 4 M.

It’s possible marketing wanted to avoid emphasizing the word “CREAM,” or simply avoid referencing the earlier poorly-regarded films (as suggested earlier). This was, also, originally a retool, and that spirit may have carried into the designs for the marketing materials.
