This! Is! ANNOYING! Fixin' wicks on Punctuated Emphasis.: Punctuated For Emphasis

Punctuated Emphasis has nearly two thousand wicks on the website, and from what I've seen a lot of these are not examples from the shows/comics/games/washer-dryer combos themselves, but by editors who just want to link to the article. For example:

"* Bob and Jane are walking on a road which is on fire. THE. ROAD. IS. ON. FIRE."

"* Yeah, the game may not be very original. But. It. Is. Fun."

It seems sort of (for a lack of a better word - oh who am I kidding, I'm just throwing this in here) egregious for the article to be linked to every time an editor does this. The patterns of writing themselves are fine, but the number of links on this wiki are bloated.

I'd just like to note to whoever comes across this that this is my first thread in this board, so I apologize if this isn't completely perfect.

IMHO: Swap! With! Redirect!

But seriously, folks... it's really the same problem as we're having with Buffy Speak.

It's called a sinkhole and Emphasize EVERYTHING and both the over-emphasis and link should be removed.

Most of it is sinkhole, feel free to chainsaw away.

(Since when did Pothole get renamed to Sinkhole? — Wait, nevermind, I see the distinction now.)

Actually, it is not a sinkhole. Sinkholes are unrelated to the text they are potholed to.

If the text itself uses Punctuated Emphasis, it's appropriate to pothole it to Punctuated Emphasis.

Here, the question is whether or not editors should be allowed to use Punctuated Emphasis in their examples at all, with or without potholes.

After that, it's the lesser problem that they direct you to the name of the annoying trope they just used.

What's the thing where tropers use it instead of the actual example? Like what happened with So Yeah.

Well, since very loosely Chef:Pot :: Troper:Example, by analogy it's a Chefhole.

I donąt see a problem. People want to have some fun while writing other tropes, let them.

[up][up][up] I don't think that it's the same thing here, So Yeah was only added for the sake of adding So Yeah. It became a verbal tic.

But these cases are about identifying uniqe variations of jokes, like as My Friends... and Zoidberg, Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking, or Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick based jokes are often invoked in editing.

Sorry for bumping this, but I'm not sure how to get the "Trope Repair Shop Discussion" box onto the main page? Since this discussion was made, at least 30 other wicks have been added. I'd hate to pimp my own thread, but I'd like for other people to see this.

You have to use the Ptitle in the tag if the page has a Ptitle. I fixed it for you.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

You have to point the tag slot at the location of the page.

Switch it to Punctuated Emphasis and get rid of any sinkholing, de-300ify it, and get rid of the boldcapsing it.

It's an actual trope but we're letting the meme go too far. There's the second quote on the page or even the Skins quote down the page that would work better.

—>Mark: What's your next class?
Sid: Drama.
Mark: Right. Drama. Coursework. Fucking perfection. Or else!
Sid: Why are you talking in very short sentences?
Mark: Emphasis! Drama! Fuck off. \\

Prfnoff Since: Jan, 2001
#15: Apr 29th 2011 at 3:12:59 PM

But that's not even a good example, since "talking in very short sentences" is not what this trope is really about.

I agree that this should be renamed to Punctuated Emphasis because the meme of the title is getting old and having the meme in a trope title not only encourages people to keep it around even longer past its expiration date, but also encourages pothole abuse and meme abuse.

But it doesn't have to be screaming. Or shouting. It can be done even in ordinary. conversational. tones. of. voice.

It ought really, but it was moved here in an effort to revive it. I guess I'll move it back; maybe the crowner star by the side of the thread name will attract more eyeballs.
