The Defiant Wing

Well, maybe old war stories can wait until we're not actively in a war.

-Gale does a little shoulder-roll shrug-

Might need a drink before this is all over...

-She says, as though she hasn't been managing to drink an entire glass through an 'emergency induction port' every time the ship hits a safe station-

Hammerlocke Banquet, Dragons

Luperian: Because witch girl put you under before you could publically accuse us of Doing A Crime.

Takcorian: Trust us, if we were going to Do A Crime it would be way more 'punching up' and stylish than orchestrating a bunch of band fails.

Hammerlocke Banquet, Gale

Honestly? It's been rather easy for me to lean into that. I'm... Unsure how much of it is me and how much of it is just leaning into the region for the thrill of it...

Defiant Wing

Arthur nodded, "We have the selection on board, I remember an old mix back from the days of old, I could share it with you-"

There was a soft dinging noise and the voice of Silas echoed over the intercom, "Everyone in the Crew report to the Meeting Room for an important announcement."

Arthur sighed, "Really gets into the role doesn't he?"

Defiant Wing - Meeting Room

Silas stood at the end of the table as he watched everyone shuffle in, "Alright, we've made it to the end of Sector 2, we'll be hitting Jump for Sector 3 about... now."

There was a jerk and the ship shook a little as it entered Jump Space, Silas ran his hands through his hair, "I won't ask about what went down on the station, we got a lot done, and I managed to get the shield upgraded to level-3 thanks to the scrap you guys got."

Roxy gave a thumbs up, "We also managed to get some semi-fresh food, it's not Earth fresh seeing as most stuff is grown in tubes but we did get stuff we could eat."

Silas nodded, "Gale if you could, assemble some of it into some packaged meals, stuff like this is apparently traded out here. A fresh meal is harder to come by, and an extra bargaining chip is useful."

Hacks chuckled, ~We're really getting stuff done out here.~

"Finally, thanks to Bishop, Shutter, and Upton, we have some important Intel."

The screen kicked on and displayed a star chart, "We have a path to follow, the Rebellion apparently has deemed this planet-" Silas said pointing to it, "-important. It is named Polity and apparently it is an... abandoned world?"

"Correct Captain, listed as uninhabited and uninhabitable. It is an important part and is supposedly the origin of the Rebellion, where General Tiedrich first made his steps out," Bishop noted.

The screen switched to Federation Intel, displaying the Alakazam in question, notably there were two pictures of him. One that seemed brighter in colour, displaying a optimistic looking Alakazam wearing a purple federation uniform. The other showcased the orange general's uniform, as well as a blue cape... and a bionic right eye.

"Tiedrich Kienter was a scientific researcher, very much a Star Trek type of brave new worlds and all," Bishop said, "Zeke would have liked him. You as well Captain, he visited Polity to see what had caused the world to go under, as it once had a popualtion... supposedly what he saw there broke him and necessitated emergency surgery that gave him that bionic eye."

Silas stared at the two pictures, looked to his own prosthetic hand and flexed the fingers a bit, "Something isn't right here, and we need to go to Polity to find out."

"The planet is off limits to all Rebellion members, and the Federation sees no tactical value in taking the Jump-Routes through there," Bishop stated, "We are charting a course."

Silas nodded, "So, we'll be hitting Polity in a little bit, any major questions?"

Hammerlocke Banquet

Evelyn: I didn't want you saying something incredibly stupid or offensive.

Me: When was the last time I ever offended someone?

Evelyn: Good point.

Me: Anyways, as for the matter at hand, I must know. How was the Orochi Group involved in the incidents?

Evelyn: As for the motives, Ian here thought of at least three. Those three being...

One: Money

If the saboteurs had anything to gain from the Battle of the Bands financially by causing the downfall of some of Meloetta's bands, they would. If there was a cash prize given out for the Battle, they'd stop at nothing to try and get it.

Two: Revenge

Think about it: Meloetta arranged the battle of the bands as a celebration of the J-Team fixing the sky and saving the Multiverse, right? So, if the saboteurs had a grudge against the J-Team, then attacking the Battle of the bands would be the best way to go about it, right?

Evelyn: As for the third motive, I'm not sure you'll like to hear what it is...

Me: Also, "punching up"? What's that?

Palace?

Joybringer: Shadow? As in the Shadow of our client?

-The wall warps, a claw lashes out.-

-A fist descends, a Shadow cries out in pain.-

-A gunshot rings out, and the cries stop.-

-The girl collects them and is on her way as the fist unclenches and returns to the space between waking and dreaming.-

Ballonlea Stadium

Announcer: Well, we've had some great battles today, guys, but it's not over yet because it seems that Challenger Hoops is having another go after their loss this morning. Let's hope it goes better for them this time, eh?

Ballonlea Stadium, Waiting Room

As Hoops is preparing for their challenge, Bede enters the room.

Bede: What are you doing?

Hoops: Challenging you. I thought that was your job.

Bede: Do I have to beat you twice in the same say?

Hoops: No. You won't.

Bede: There's something different about you.

Hoops: Well spotted. Can we get this started?

Bede: Sure, since you won't change your mind. But the questions in your gym puzzle will be a lot harder this time. And I won't hold back in our battle.

Hoops: I'd frankly be disappointed otherwise.

Bede leaves the room, and Hoops takes out their six new pokeballs. They examine them for a moment, then go through the door into the puzzle room.

Ballonlea Stadium, Pitch, about five minutes later

There is a small explosion sound from the entrance to the pitch. Bede, who has been watching Hoops go through the puzzle on the stadium screen, frowns as Hoops strides out onto the grass and takes the position opposite them.

Hoops: Three out of three. I especially liked that maths question.

Bede: It's like you're a completely different trainer than earlier. What happened?

Hoops: I did what you said. I stopped defining myself by my need to defy my father, and it let me finally grow up.

Bede: ...I feel as though my advice may have been misused.

Referee: The rematch between Gym Leader Bede and Challenger Hoops shall now commence. Because Challenger Hoops correctly answered all three questions in their gym puzzle, they may freely switch pokemon, and may use six pokemon while Gym Leader Bede may only use four.

Bede: No.

Referee: Excuse me?

Bede: No. This is my gym, and I make the rules. I've battled this trainer once today, and my patience for doing it again is severely limited. This will be a one on one battle with no substitutions. Each of us using our strongest pokemon.

Referee: Well, this is most irregular, but... does the challenger accept?

Hoops: Bring it.

Announcer: And a last minute shake up of the rules, agreed on by both trainers. This will be an edge of the seat match for certain.

Zoropark, Unova

A swarm of nincadas emerge from the ground, many of which later evolve almost instantaneously into cacophonic Ninjasks almost immediately after. From the stands, a large crowd of trainers led by a park ranger stand by. The park ranger has ninjask-themed accessories here and there, while many trainers wear ninjask-themed merch. A few of the kids have shiny zoroark accessories and zorua plushies.

Park Ranger: Unlike in Kalos and Johto, where these creatures spend only 10 years in the ground, those in Unova and its surrounding areas emerge every 17 years. The nincadas and ninjasks you see today have not seen the light of day since 2004. In that intervening time, few to no nincadas or ninjasks could be found in Unova since sadly, very few of them make it to mate the following year. These so-called annual ninjasks must be left alone to preserve the population.

The crowd sighs in pity.

Park Ranger: So, if you see a ninjask, most would've come from another regions or captured 17 years ago. Which brings us to our main event: In a few minutes, catching season will be open. The ninjasks come in a volume large enough that capturing them will not harm the population. We do have a few rules we need to follow, though. Only one nincada or ninjask per person, per year. Also, we have a few special guests in the Zoropark. The northeastern side is currently restricted to a group of nature documetary filmmakers, who will be showing our ninjasks wild on TV.

Meanwhile, in the northeastern end of Zoropark, the Geo Soc crew have just finished setting up. They are surrounded by nincadas preparing for their molt. Present are Shutter, Upton, Montalban, and Lars Pearson. They arrived via a NEO-ONE prototype that Shutter's mentor had lent to them. Despite being big enough for four people, it was still a tight fit. They were all quite happy to have spent time outside after the ride.

Montalban: I can see why Professor Mirror decided to go with the one seater for field photographers. I'm amazed at how non-intrusive it is compared to the ZERO-ONE. Those old buggies tend to leave a mess behind.

Lars: Ms. Montalban, we are allowed to capture them, right?

Montalban: But of course. We all got licenses. But remember, folks, only one nincada per trainer.

Upton: They certainly won't be too difficult to spot. I thought they didn't live here.

Montalban: They do, but they're normally very rare and capturing them is restricted. The population only gets big enough to safely catch during the Septidecimal Nincada Festival and only under license. Try saying that ten times fast.

Shutter: Alright, Scoutey, you ready?

Scout, wearing a PokéCam, chirps in anticipation.

Shutter: Now, remember, don't eat any of them. They're rare. Leave that to the wild Pokémon in the park. Besides, you already ate.

Scout: <But there's so many of them.>

Montalban: Remember, we are allowed to capture some of them, but we won't do so until after we've finished filming. Are we ready, Albright?

Shutter: Camera's all set up and Scoutey's been fed.

Lars: The monitors are ready.

Scout takes to the air.

Shutter: We're rolling in five, four, three, two.

Hammerlocke Banquet

Jane: Oh, we look forward to it, Ms. Gaia. Until we meet again.

Tommy: It's been a pleasure.

They wave the two goodbye and then begin approaching the crowd. Tommy grabs his camera.

Stormchaser, Room 713

"You've had quite a bit of time to turn your penchant for picking people apart inward. What stopped it? Were you afraid of what you would find?" He asked, legs crossed and a pen in his hand.

"Not, really? I mean, I'm content enough with who I am as a person. I'm a productive enough member of society with claims to fame, but... I dunno, maybe there's something I'm forgetting; suppressing." From on his back, he looked at his double, fighting the urge to pull up the sheets and rest.

"Maybe it was something that you were forced to leave behind? Some facet of yourself you weren't given time enough to get past? For someone in their mid-20s with monochromatic attire, you, uh, didn't handle Ilya's rejection well." He pulled a sheet of paper out from somewhere looking at the transcript of his client's breakdown.

"Please don't bring that up." He pleaded.

"I'm sorry if it's uncomfortable to you. But I do think this provides some insight. You were... less than mature handling it. I mean, isolated incident or not, it seems pretty emblematic." He looked at the transcript, not reading it out loud for his client's sake.

"I'm not entitled! You know I know that!"

"I never said you were, but you're quite defensive." He observed. "It's like a bratty child lamenting their mother didn't let them have ice cream, Arceus' unholy flank."

"What are you saying?" The patient demanded, sitting up to look the doctor in the eyes and pound a bit of tea.

"I'm saying that you may have matured too fast, and subsequently didn't mature well. There's a kid in there that never got to make and learn from his own mistakes."

"Well, how can I get him to grow up before he throws another fit?"

"I don't know if you can. You were 'raised by machines', you said? Parents too focused on work? Never had a normal childhood?"

"Well, yeah."

"Adding layers of maturity doesn't change the core kid within, kemosabe. Those years of work, the dedication and disappoint towards your drive to beat Galactic, the developmental lack of initial like-minded friends. There's a root problem of, not so much a spoiled kid these days but a teenager, chomping at the bit to act out for attention and validation."

"Are you saying I never got to be a kid because my parents were too no-nonsense?"

"And you had to be so as well in turn. Now look at you; a book written like you're [Lemony Snicket], an almost fursona-adjacent, 'reject humanity, become monke' thought process towards your Pokemon form, and that contrarian drive you live and breathe by. How did that quote go? 'He who is rejected by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth'? I'm not saying you'll do so, but from Accumula to now, you've been feeling ignored, even if you haven't been. How good have you handled it?"

The patient looked down at his legs, a bit lost for words. "Ilya would know if she looked back."

"Exactly. Bitter, bearing a grudge, yet envious. We both know she was never going to, but why do we dwell on it? Because it was the most validation we had ever gotten from a source like her. Kamui doesn't have that problem; you pet her ears and she melts. But you... it's like watching someone pound a shot in celebration of a sobriety chip. And then relapse into withdrawal."

"... yeah." He nodded and sat up. "Good talk, me."

"Of course, me." The seated Colton vanished into black wisps, the papers and pen he held falling to the ground.

The real Unovan sighed, laying back down. "I know I said I needed validation only from myself, but..." he placed a hand over his eyes. "Where the hell do I get it from?..."

RECAP: Shadesden and the Distortion World

Early in April 2020, a bulletin appeared on the Stormchaser, calling for help hunting down a rogue glitch. Those who answered met up with Nazena, an Ultra Megalopolitan glitch hunter partnered with a corrupted Doublade, individually named Sunder and Shiver. She explained the situation — a remnant of the glitch that had infested Sinnoh four years prior seemed to have escaped, taking refuge in the Distortion World. With Sunder's help, she opened a rift to Distortion to seek it out.

The party found themselves on a red-soil trail winding up the side of a rocky blue mountain, curiously lined with a series of lanterns. There was not much time to admire the scenery, though, as the party was soon accosted by Void Shadows, living Obscura coalesced into amorphous forms that could temporarily shift into impersonations of real Pokemon. In addition to attacking the party, they also managed to temporarily snuff out the nearby lanterns, letting the ambient suffocating Obscura fog creep in, until the lanterns were relit again by a quick Flash.

The Void Shadows didn't turn out to be too terribly much of a threat, but the scuffle did draw the attention of a man wandering the Distortion World mountainside — a man of Ranseian heritage, apparently. He introduced himself as Haru, and led the party down to the base of the mountain, to a surprisingly large settlement — Shadesden, a village born in the wake of the Ghost Lord's many, many banishments centuries ago, coming together for a second chance at life on the other side, and a sanctuary for others who find themselves falling through the planes. Despite the Distortion World's disconnect from the material plane's passage of time, generations have passed, villagers being born and living and aging and dying as normal.

Haru introduced the party to Lauren, a younger Shadesden resident, fallen through the veil due to her peers messing with misappropriated magic that they didn't care to understand. Haru has been helping her integrate into the community, part of which consists of taking a vigil known as the Watch near the clock towers of the village — timekeeping tools miraculously synchronized, kept under constant observation so as to keep their artificially-crafted bubble of flowing time maintained. Lauren, being a recent castaway, seemed more familiar with the "glitch" concept that the party presented to her, and informed the party that the Void Shadows were normally relatively benign, but seemed to be getting strangely aggressive, with the source of the aggression seeming to stem from the opposite side of the mountain, near a collection of floating islands and a location known as "the Prison".

Which brings us to where time left off...

Shadesden

Lauren, previously: They, um, told me to stay way far away, so I'm gonna relay that advice to you.

Tagg: That sounds like the portion of the Distortion World I'm more familiar with.

Medea: Oooh, the Prison? What's it like?

-Lauren stammers.-

Lauren: I-I don't know, I barely remember anything from when I fell. I-I thought it was all a freaky dream, that I was going to wake up from any moment, and then I d-didn't. Mr. Haru found me, quickly brought me here, and told me that it was a Prison. I dunno if he was saying that things used to be locked away there, or that they still were, or what. But I'm staying away.

Hazel: I wonder if the weirdness is just caused by this being the distortion world, or if the glitches have anything to do with it?

Lauren: To me, it just... seems as freaky as everything else. But everyone else says the ooze things are normally safe. But now they're not.

-And as Logan and Addie contemplate the nature of the Prison, Lauren falls deathly silent. Every name-drop of Giratina seems to induce a brand new spike of anxiety, leaving her looking tense and sickly.-

Lauren: ...

Shadesden

Hazel: But if there's some sort of society here, surely there have been at least a few people who needed to be locked up somewhere. Really, "the prison" could mean just about anything. It could be some sort of glitch, a dangerous pokemon, a dangerous human... I guess the only thing we can be pretty sure of is someone doesn't want whatever's in there out.

Training, as you do

Nice!

Say, you wouldn't know anyone interested in a battle right now?

Logan: -glances up- Hey, do you want to battle?

Abilene: Are you offering?

Logan: Nah.

Abilene: Shame. I might've agreed for the novelty factor.

-flicking her fingers for her Pokémon- Hard pass. We're neck-deep in research, remember? To find the baddies before yet another region goes to shit?

Logan: -shrug, unfazed- Megan's asking.

Abilene: ...

Abilene: Huh.

Quick canvass turned up zilch, sorry.

PEFE!Every: I'm Every.

-Hiro squints curiously at the bottle of deterrent detergent-

Hiro: I'm not necessarily an enemy yet.

Voice of a Litwick: <That's not as reassuring as we're raised to think, Hiro.>

Hiro: -shrug- I can't exactly promise I won't be an enemy if someone points…

-squints harder- ...a very interesting mixture of toxins at me, if that sign's anything to go by. Hopeful, though.

Hiro: You can call me Hiro. I'm Hiro, and I'm here trying to track down someone who's been trying to kill me.

-the moss is pretty fresh stuff-

Hiro: ...not you. I don't believe I've met you before, and any homicide attempts can only be imminent. Your Dunsparce are cute.
