Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

I mean, they were also both part of the New Avengers too.

I'd expect there must of been some lampshade hanging of how they didn't work together often despite similar themes.

I think Bendis made quite a few jokes of Peter being offended over Jessica not asking his permission. As far as the Spider-Family stuff goes, I feel like the best inclusion with Jess was that crossover special she had with Gwen and Cindy, Spider-Women. She was given a kind of Big Sister dynamic with those two.

You know, on the subject of Peter's relationship with the others. I feel like the big reason writers avoid doing storylines between Pete and any of the Spider-women is because so many don't know how to do platonic relationships between men and women. Like hell, look at how Slott wrote Peter with Cindy and then Bobbi.

Or Bendis and Jason Latour's Miles and Gwen storyline which immediately started Ship teasing the two before they even had a proper chance to interact.

But that was during the period when the avengers were giving memberships to anyone and letting anyone open their own branch of the team

I call them the franchising years

For a time, the Avengers were the chain restaurant of heroism

There's also that weird bit where they are trying to force in Jess but are completely ignoring Kaine and Ben despite both being far more relevant to Peter and the spider stuff than Jess is.

Hell Kaine was an Other and can transform into a spider-monster state even.

Now that I think about it, considering how Miles was the only guy on the Spider-Team during Last Remains, they may just be trying to do more female representation here I guess.

New Avengers is my favorite Avengers years.

There's also that weird bit where they are trying to force in Jess but are completely ignoring Kaine and Ben despite both being far more relevant to Peter and the spider stuff than Jess is.

Which is why Jess is better than Ben and Kaine. Jess adds to the mythos. Ben and Kaine just drain from existing mythology.

Imagine Jess and Peter vs. Hydra.

Because Kaine and Ben are Peter's brothers who he has a lot of history and growth with, Kaine and Ben now being completely different people from when they started out, plus Kaine's increased connection to the Spider Totems which is a reoccurring thing.

Vs Jessica being just some random person who happens to use a similar alias to Peter. Jess doesn't add much aside from adding another female Spider-person which is already done with Anya, Silk, and Gwen.

I keep thinking with so much of Spencer's run getting dedicated to house-cleaning Spider-Man from the past decade and a half of storytelling, he's just biding his time until he finally gets around with what he wants to do with Ben and Kaine.

My preference there is to keep Kaine around as the Scarlet Spider, but Ben is better off getting shelved. I feel like what really screwed Kaine over was not Clone Conspiracy, but all the Superior Spider-Man stuff because it was there that Otto effectively usurped his role as the "Anti Hero Spider-Man."

Jess works more in a spy setting. The current run really went there and it's probably one of the best runs of Spider-Woman.

The one relationship that I really don't understand hasn't been exploited is Anya and Miles. Both latinos of puertorrican descent who live in Brooklyn. It's jarring seeing Brooklyn going to hell every other arc of Miles, and where is Anya? Dunno, with Mayday in the MC 2 verse I guess. In the 5 years since Miles officially moved to 616 they haven't had a single interaction.

Comics should feel ashamed that A CARTOON made this connection and showed them as friends (and maybe more) despite cartoons having a longer production period.

[up][up] Well the Superior Spider-Man is gone now so Kaine can take his place.

[up] Hey the comics don't know what to do with Anya for over a decade, they aren't gonna start to figure that out now. :V

[up][up]Yeah I do wish Ahmed would have Anya appear in an arc. Especially when that last arc had Ultimatum and his gang attacking all of Brooklyn and the only hero (outside of Bombshell and Starling) to appear as backup was Captain America.

I've juuuuust started reading Anya's original comics. I've only read the first three or four issues so far, but it's cool. She definitely deserves more to do in the comics.

And yeah, trying to force Jessica Drew into Peter Parker's circle is absurd. Jessica works in very different worlds from Peter. She's been a spy, a private detective (bring back Lindsay Mc Cabe!), and honestly, she even fits the Avengers better than Peter does. Peter's at his best working locally, Jessica's at her best working globally.

Making her work with Peter is just leaving her slumming it, and she's got way cooler slums she can be working in.

I admit, the Clone Saga is what killed a 10 year interest in comics from the I was old enough to read.

So I don't have a long affection for Kaine or Ben.

Maybe every now and then.

But not as regular characters.

Unlike Jessica.

Gwenom vs Carnage

Big development... for the forseeable future, there's going to be two Mary Janes running about in 616, as Em Jay is staying with Gwen, not just that, but she still has a piece of the Carnage symbiote inside of her...the comic is taking some influences from the fate of MJ in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon

For all the 616 designation seems meant to avoid it being the "prime" Earth like Earth-1 it sure ended up that way. XD

Its a point of contention apparently. Marvel tried to change it to Earth-8 after Secret Wars Again but it did not stick.

Gwen Stacy marries Spider-Man.

Just not Peter Parker.

What's not to get?

Its not like Miles has a love interest who is interesting as Gwen either.

Superman and Wonder Woman is a pretty terrible pairing because there’s nothing to the relationship aside from shallow superficialities, so why is Miles and Gwen any different?

They are not together because of good chemistry of anything, they were together solely because they are the most high-profile spider-subsidiary characters.
