A troper replaced the first image on this page with the second one:

I actually think the new one is better too, but I reverted the image and started this thread on the general principle that existing images shouldn't be replaced unilaterally.

The new image is better, although it's got some jpeg artifact stuff.

Another vote for the new image.

It's too bad so much of the laptop is cropped off, but, I like it.

If we could get a version with a better view of the laptop, that would be even better.

But I agree it's better than the old image.

That picture from EVA relies ENTIRELY on the caption. How are we suppose to know that the series takes place in 2015?

Interestingly, I bought a MIG Welder last summer, and the dang thing came with a VHS tape on how to use it. The device was constructed within the last year itself.

Definitely the new image. pittsburghmuggle, did you upload the image as is or did you crop part of it off?

New pic is much better. Old one is pretty much just a device and a caption.

Is the new image from a work?

Seems like we have a pretty strong consensus for replacement.

[up] No, it just makes them better. I think she was asking about what to link to, though.

I don't even think it necessarily makes the image better, but if it is from a work, I'm always curious to know which one it's from.

I think it does. This Wiki is a catalog of devices in works. If there are two images that are otherwise equally good, the one from fiction is better.

I disagree wholeheartedly. The image is supposed to show the trope, being fictional offers nothing.

Agreeing with Deboss on this one. If a real life image illustrates the trope better, then we should be using it.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

Yes, I said "images that are otherwise equally good". Obviously illustrating the trope trumps being from fiction. It is just another consideration. Disagree?

[up] Eh, I'd say it shouldn't be a factor at all.

Cuz the purpose of the image is to illustrate the trope. Real Life examples are bad examples of the trope's usage, but Real Life images can demonstrate the trope just as well as fictional examples. And, I mean, functionally, there's very little difference between a Real Life image and an image from a live action film.

But I digress.

[up] It's only really a factor as a tie breaker. If you have two images that both are equally good and equally show the trope then the In Media image should go up over the Real Life because it's got a hair's edge as being a bit more on topic to the media's message.

What is comes down to here is the present image is NOT good. I had to have it explained to me. This does NOT come down to a tiebreaker, so that discussion is moot.
