The wolves and cougars have been pacified quite a bit, so traveling is more feasible early game, probably more so than the cities where you could run into zombie hulks.

Ummmmmmmm

Not in my experience now. :B

However I am quite happy to see a new building type. The Public Works. LOTS of building materials, found a whole truck, lots of weapon options, lots of building space, welder, spare parts, food, and best of all, completely unguarded, save for an eyebot should you break down a locked entrance. Find yours today!

Wait, does that game seriously have GRABOIDS in it!? I suddenly feel the need to play it.

Latest death: Bob the Demigod. Cause: Humiliating.

[up]You should try it, you and onyhow were having an interesting conversation on game balance and I think cata is a good compromise on both your points.

So, uh, how do I harvest these blueberry bushes? Gah! One thing about playing something that's not fantasy based is that they need to stop cribbing their hotkeys from nethack.

And ARE there Graboids? What about Shriekers and Assblasters?

Latest Death: Pyo the Gnomish Priest. An eye of destruction took out his armor, and a Displacer Beast quickly leapt in for the kill.

I just stand next to the bush, press "e", and arrow key toward the bush. There's also underbrush, but I've never gotten anything from them; blueberry bushes are also empty sometimes.

There are graboids, I got killed by one once, but they're pretty rare. Shriekers are a kind of zombie that takes advantage of the sound system. Not sure about the last one, though.

Man, the talk on Rogue Survivor and Cataclysm just reminded me: is anyone here playing UnReal World? I think this is the most "proper" survival roguelike (or just general survival game) out there...and it's currently free! (normally you have to pay for license, the author is making it free for a few versions and will extend it if he got more money that would normally be a standard payment)

Give me cute or give me...something?

[up][up][up] Aww, so they don't have the full graboid life cycle. A shame, but I'll take what I can get. I loved those movies.

[up] Iiiiinteresting. I feel like I have enough roguelikes to deal with right now though...

Latest Death: Jeeyuh the Troll Barbarian. She's gotten farther than any ADOM character I've set to random generation before. She got five points of toughness drained by wights, and then killed by a swamp hydra when I retreated from the graveyard... Oh, and she had an unidentified amulet of life saving in her inventory. This isn't the first time this has happened to me.

On a side note, I'm starting to see why we have different Roguelike tastes. I mainly play roguelikes for fun, see. I guess you could call me a Roguelike "casual", but then again the terms casual and hardcore in regards to gaming never really meant much to me.

Dungeons of Dredmore is very good to start. Streamlined, excellent gameplay, great sense of humor, and a lot of variety. Alternatively, there's Tales of Maj'Eyal, which has very fun combat.

Or there's FTL: Faster than Light, which has a very fast combat system to experiment with.

Or you could dive right in to Nethack and die quite a lot. :)

Generally there are two camps when it comes to a good starter Roguelike: those that want to get into rougelikes for the complexity, and those who want to for the permadeath and difficulty.

For the former camp, I would personally recommend Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, as it is a very deep and complex game without being terribly obtuse.

For the later, I would say one of the roguelikelikes (or coffee break roguelikes, or roguelites, whatever the hell you want to call them) like The Binding Of Isaac or FTL.

I think I've played as an elf longer in Tales Of Maj Eyal than I have in any other game. Not that that's saying much, but hey. Summoner's fun.

It does bug me how boring the race selection usually is in these games. I mean, look at ADOM: It has Hurthlings and gnomes. Why. It does nothing to make gnomes in any way unique. And I can usually understand Elves and Dwarves, sure. Just to round things out. But no game is ever happy with just one variety of elf. I can sometimes understand that; Warhammer managed to do some epic stuff with the three main varieties: High Elves, Dark Elves and Wood Elves. But not only is this often buried under "No, they're different this time honest" fantasy-speak (Dalish! Dunmer! Thal'amor!) we got things like ADOM again where we have High Elves which we all know, Gray Elves which are basically just a more ethereal level of High Elves, and then Mist Elves which are just another step above Gray! And then Stone Soup comes around and puts a major twist on Dwarves with their permanent damage gimmick. Look, if you're going to use Dwarves just use the archetype. It's what people are used to. If you want to mix things up, make something unique. Give us playable Golems, or Harpies, or Arachne, or Jotun, or something else cool. Arrrgh!

/rant

I think I'm starting to think Angband is my least fave of the popular roguelikes. Far too often combat is decided merely by how many healing potions you have in your pocket.

[up]Agreed. I usually just play human, and rarely deviate from that unless there's some more unique choices(though I'm okay with hobbits).

Also, cata seems like it's going to get music in a future update. Just listen https://soundcloud.com/tekxcher/dark-days-ahead-demo-2

(Casts Resurrection on topic)

So I've finally bitten the bullet and gotten into Dungeon Crawl. Its good fun, but hellishly hard (which I've come to expect from Roguelikes). I've mostly been a Minotaur so far, but I think I'm gonna start rolling a Hill Orc so I can use helmets and my intelligence score doesn't suck, at least until .13 comes out and Gargoyles are added.

Since I'm mainly a melee warrior type, which is the better god, Trog or Okawaru?

Oh, man. I just had the best run so far in Torneko No Daibouken.

So, in this game, to make sure I always have something to show for my spelunkings, I bring an Outside scroll from the storehouse alongside a designated sword and shield to power level. If I don't have an Outside scroll in the storehouse, said sword and shield stay in the storehouse as well.

In this run, I ran into about 3 more Outside scrolls. The enemies get really brutal at around the 22nd or so floor, and the Box of Happiness (This game's equivalent to the Amulet of Yendor) is on the 27th. A bit light compared to other roguelikes, but a roguelike is a roguelike, and Dragon Quest does not fuck around.

I somehow manage to make due with 4 wands, 2 of them as test identified Expels (teleport monster), one a test ID'd Sleep, and the last one a scroll ID'd Chaos (polymorph monster) from floors 21 to 25. Enemies here can lower your level, move twice and attack twice, and even shave off YOUR HP CAPACITY (for the run). Those Mystic Dolls give the Black Plague look like infants.

By floor 26, I was lucky to have ran into a Slow wand, or those Winged Demons would have reamed my shit. Thankfully, I had found a Dragon shield from floor 16, so those Green Dragon's fire breaths were no problem at all.

I finally find the Box of Happiness on Floor 27. Giddy at the music change, I pop up the menu, make room for it by eating an Elixir, cocky bastard that I am, and read an Outside scroll.

"HAPPINESS (box symbol) blocked Outside (scroll symbol)!"

... Oh, fuck you.

Oh fuck you very much, Chunsoft.

Cue ten floors of me gritting my teeth every step in a hallway, checking every tile before i step on it and overall filled with the fear of god at my slowly drained resources. Not even the Disarm ring I found ascending back up to floor 22 alleviated the fear of a wrong step at the wrong time. I probably should have been searching for more items, because there definitely were more each floor I ascended. But I wanted out.

No more stave charges. From here on, it was mano a mano with 2 Return herbs (teleports the consumer) and an as of now useless Antidote herb. I made sure to hug the walls and blitz for the hallways when I saw them.

At the end of one hallway, I was confronted by a Winged Demon, and my weapon missed twice. When I finished him off, I was down to 15 hp.

there was a Giant two moves away from me. End of the line. What's it gonna be, Schitzo? Blaze of Glory, or a cowardly retreat?

... Realizing I put too much time into leveling these swords and shields, I dropped the Box of Happiness and read an Outside scroll before the Giant could touch me.

That really was a fun run, though. I wish more games did that, making you sport a grin every time you cheat death and bring it forth tenfold, be it by grace or fluke. Only shmups and Demons Souls seems to do that for me now. Its games like these that make me love the medium and want to get into game design.

Welp... Till next game.

ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.
