I'd say Metroid is basically Aliens with a One-Man Army instead of a squad of marines.

It's action horror, but it's still horror (part of the experience is the danger of being alone on an alien world, after all).

And any time actual Metroids appear it is sheer horror, even if you are able to deal with them. Tourian in general is always creepy as hell, and both the Phazon Mines and the derelict ship in Corruption are intense.

Saw a speedrun of this fanmade prequel built on top of the NES Metroid ROM, it's pretty good.

Hey, if the Galactic Federation is made up of "representatives of the many different planets in the galaxy", why is that every time we see Galactic Federation personnel in the games they're all human?

I have this theory that in the metroid universe, humans are everywhere because they breed fast, compared to other races. You know how humans gave rabbits this reputation for always uh, reproducing? Well, I picture humans have that same reputation among aliens.

I just finished watching Proton Jon's streams of Metroid: Other M. I had read summaries of the plot, but this was really my first time "experiencing" the whole story.

I had heard plenty about Samus's monotone monologues but somehow they're worse than I was expecting. It feels like every time Samus's voiceover starts it sucks away what little energy the (usually already boring) cutscenes had. And she does it even when other characters are present, which gives the impression that whenever somebody talks to Samus she just stares into space and monologues in her head about what's going on. ... To be fair I also do that sometimes...

Looking at the plot of Other M with the rest of the series in mind there's a lot of aggravating details. There's completely ignoring the Chozo to claim Adam is "the closest thing to a father [Samus] had". There's the missed opportunity of claiming MB was based on the same programming as Mother Brain but never using that to comment on the original Mother Brain's motivations for turning against her creators. There's reusing a plot twist from Fusion that retroactively means that in Fusion Samus shouldn't have been shocked by the twist. I won't even talk about the infamous Ridley scene because there's nothing that hasn't already been said about it. And there's this small detail that isn't a contradiction but personally I don't like it: In Fusion when Samus talked about how Adam would end every briefing with "Any objections, Lady?" I never interpreted that as Adam giving briefings to a whole platoon but then singling out Samus at the end, but according to Other M that's what it was... and I just think that makes it weird.

Beyond not meshing well with the rest of the series... this game, that is trying so hard to be a deep cinematic storyline, just doesn't have a good handle on its own plot. I'd heard about how the game has three independent antagonists (MB, Ridley, and the Deleter) and all of them wind up being taken out by someone other than Samus, with two of them dying without Samus even being present (already a major problem), but watching a full playthrough I realize that you're haphazardly jumping between the too many subplots for the entire game, and generally not affecting them yourself. A standout example is the first trip to Sector 3 where you go in chasing the Mystery Creature, run around a bunch, take a whole lot of heat damage for no reason, and then you find a room you can't get through without the Grapple Beam and Adam says "OK, Samus. Head to Sector 2. There's a high probability of survivors hiding there. We'll have to take care of that freak of nature later." Note he doesn't even say that they've spotted signs of survivors in Sector 2, he's just abruptly decided to cut short your search of the Mystery Creature, seemingly in reaction to you not being able to make any progress, except that you could make progress if he simply authorized the Grapple Beam, and much later when he finally does authorize the Grapple Beam it's in that exact same room. Also, after the Ridley fight, when Samus follows the Deleter into Sector 1 she bumps into MB who drops a whole bunch of exposition, then Samus promptly turns around and forgets about the Deleter entirely...?

And much like Jon I am still left wondering why Adam shot Samus.

Samus is just a spectator in her own game.

I feel your pain, my god was Other M such an abomination to this franchise.

I liked Adam back in the manga, and that was before this game came out.

There is a reason why people call this game sexist.

On that subject, as far as Other M is concerned, even in the far flung future in the interplanetary cultural melting pot of the Galactic Federation, women in the military are still rare enough that Samus was the only woman in her squad and was treated differently for it. That was never canon before, was it?

Yeah, in the Manga, there were females who were part of the military.

Again, Other M has NOT aged well.

If anything, other m hasn't gotten worse over time. It was near-unanimously decried when it came out and it's not any better today but people have moved on.

They had an out with everyone being out of character or making dumb decisions, too. Wasn't it shown in-game that Ridley's voice was causing the other creatures to go blood thirsty crazy? That could have been used to justify the other characters being weird: Ridley evolved enough for his voice to screw with their minds too.

Considering how many people bring it up time and time again, I don't buy that people have moved on.

"moved on" doesn't mean "people stopped having issues with the game". It means people stopped viscerally hating the game for what they perceive as damaging a franchise they like and can live knowing the game still exists and not be depressed over that. Of course, if someone decides to bring up the topic in their general vicinity, they're still likely to engage in the debate and criticize it.

Now if you think the recent discussions here are the level of vitriol the game used to get, you may need a trip back to the past.

As someone else noted a couple pages ago, other m hasn't gotten worse over time but it hasn't been reassessed on a global scale either. it's still not good.

It's more of the fact I've seen this same topic being repeated over and over for 10 years to the point of boredom. If we've truly moved on, we should be discussing about the future, like the fact that Retro Studios apparently hired folks who worked on Call of Duty.

Oh Anthony Higgs needs more love. And I'm disappointed he gets lost in this sea of repetition.

Honestly, this thread’s usually been very chill about it. Yes, it’s still not liked but we’ve long gone past “thread-locking or moderation surprise” fury. We’re basically cold porridge. I don’t even think we talk about it all that much.

I don’t even think criticisms have been very annoying, either. It’s the people reacting against the critics that tend to be tetchy.
