The Holy Land in 1167.

I would like Nubia to be contiguous, but I do not want to destroy Jerusalem. The only reason they have managed to survive is my meddling.

I'm a bit concerned about Iberia.

@Pentadragon... that's crazy.

[up][up] Not bad.

[up] Which year is that?

I'm playing as Ming at the moment. Inflation is through the roof. Soon enough it will reach 25% :|

1706. Admittedly it took me a lot of time to get the factions figured out, and the europeans were really slow to get to asia.

EDIT: That westernized to Latin tech. I got Muslim in the early 1600's.

Sweet. Did it change to the Qing Dynasty?

1459 on my part. I've managed to manipulate the factions pretty well by now. Rebellions all over the place because I lost the mandate of Heaven.

[up] Nope. Historical determinism is limited to EUII.

I actually have a bulk of the territory of the ERE, and I westernized fairly early, which is why I have a tech lead even with my size.

Playing my first successful game as England.

Right now (1511), James I Plantagenet is the emperor of England, Scotland and Ireland, and will unite them under the British banner around 1550. He is also the ruler of the Canary islands, English Iceland and the north American territories(upper Canada all the way down to Massachusetts). He inherited most of these territories form his father, Henry De Aviz, of Portuguese ancestry.

On the global scale, France is gigantic, Austria rules all of northern Italy and parts of central Europe, the Golden Horde destroyed all of the Russian countries almost completely, Portugal has Aragon, Israel, some Caribbean islands and a bit of South America, and Castillia has the entire north African coast and the coast of modern Portugal. Wut.

Unfortuantly, Inflation is high and the country is at a bit of a debt, and I have no idea how to change this beyond having the national bank, hiring three inflation reducers and slowly building post offices and workshops around England.

Playing Vicky II as Sweden to learn the ropes.

Gave Denmark a rather serious bloody nose, unfortunately I should have realized the "Cut Down To Size" casus belli meant that I'd be giving them their territory back as soon as I negotiated peace. Would have been awesome to have wiped them off the board before 1843.

Going to focus on cultural research for a while to rack up prestige points then call Russia and say I want Finland back. Hopefully that's not going to be as fun as it sounds.

I'm glad more people are playing this - or at least attempting to install it. There may be some advice on the Paradox Games forums if you can't get it to work.

Playing as Ottomans. I managed to vassalise most of the Balkan states and use them as cannon fodder. So far, Bosnia, Serbia, Wallachia, Ragusa, Croatia, and Byzantium. Not particularly good against powerful enemies who always send big armies, but they can turn the tide of a war. I wish there was some way to merge vassals - most of them are just 2 states large, hardly enough to raise large armies.. Yes, Southern Ireland is under Moroccan rule by 1434.

England, Vijaynagar, and Lithuania must be three of the five "lucky" AI. They are all doing noticeably well compared to the others.

Also, Asia Minor looks a bit untidy, but the surviving territories are annoyingly stubborn.

Is there any particular question you want to ask? Maybe I could post it on your behalf.

You don't need the CD key to access the single player game as far as I know.

Nope. It's Probably Nothing.

Mainly, I was hoping to take a look at http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=388613, as that is where one of the entries on WINE's App database referred me to.

EDIT: It hasn't asked for a key or anything, and it hasn't given one.

I got it from...NYC Electronics through Amazon. I really hope it's legit...

EDIT TIDE: Jeez, should I email Paradox support?

Copypasta

I posted this tutorial here in the beta forum some time ago, and it was quite well read many hours of betatester sweat was needed to bring this text to its current state.

As I have currently not much time to continue working on this tutorial, see it as a post-christmas gift *g*. Actually i wanted to bring this guide into a state, where it would be fool proof, but well, sometimes studying computer science and security interferes with you private agenda :-p

I would be happy if someone can use this as a base to enhance the users Linux+EU 3 experience.

This posting will be cross-posted in the EU 3 general forum and the tech-support forum, so it won't get lost instantly

Have fun reading! (late) Santa-Burning

edit: remember that there is currently NO official support from paradox for running EU 3 on Linux, so please don't report problems in the tech support forums.

You all heave heard of it: Wine tastes good! The best wine comes from burgundy.

If you think that this thread is about the red or white perfectly tasting liquid, send you traders there and don't read on.

On the other hand, if you are teetotaler or don't like wine, but always wanted to play the EU 3 games in Linux, you are right here. Maybe you have not yet tried games in linux, maybe you only use it for working, or not at all, because you dislike switching to windows for playing games. Now with Wine 1.1.0 released you can finally get EU 3 based games(Rome, EU 3, NA, IND) to work nearly without limitations.

I will try to collect and publish all required information you need to get EU 3 running on your linux-box here, note that some of this information is also available on the net! Thank you all who invested work into this topic before i did! This guide will only be written for EU 3 patched to IND, but NA and 1.3 might work too. If you have only those versions installed: don't ask for help or support, i won't be able to test that, nor will i keep even more parallel installations of EU 3 on my H Ds (there are already 4 there, IND 3.2, a modded IND 3, and two version which don't belong here)...

For your information, this is the current status: The game is perfectly playable and VERY stable Singleplayer mode is tested Multiplayer is NOT tested (maybe one of you can lend me a hand here) Sound effects work Music does not play there are some graphics glitches, but they don't hinder game play in any way:

around a third of the flags are not displayed, this might be a bug in Imagemagick fixed
ships are not textured
province/sea borders are displayed, even in terra incognita
there is a texture error in the pacific east of where the map is wrapped together, south of Africa and in Siberia
hardware requirements:

A Computer with quite a good CPU

around 1024 MB of FREE memory (total memory minus currently used memory = FREE!)

GFX card with activated direct rendering and openGL extensions As ATI provides crappy UNIX drivers that tend to break things, use a NVIDIA gfx card(GF 6100 and beyond should do the trick), their drivers are much better, but if you get your ATI drivers to work properly, the game should also work for you perfectly well! Current Intel Graphic-enabled Chipsets are NOT suitable...

a keyboard

a mouse  or working touchscreen input

a bit of linux knowledge
Software Requirements:

a recent linux distribution, running either on amd64 or normal 32bit x86 PC
installed wine 1.0.0 and above use wine 1.0.0 or above, i am using 1.1.0 under gentoo linux amd64, but wine 1.0.0 should do the trick
a completely installed EU 3 installation the gamersgate downloader does not work under linux, as long as there is no .NET 2.0 support, so use your regular installation from your windows partition.
possibly use winetricks to install dotnet 2.0, Direct X, gecko and corefonts (untested)
disable 3d effects! this includes compiz( fusion) and any other "wobbling windows" eye-candy effects currently present in your distribution (fedora and ubuntu do normally have those installed by default, check that they are disabled)
The Guide: I presume that your system is set up correctly and 3d acceleration is working. In this guide i will use the tool winecfg, which is a GUI util. if you like configfiles more (so do i), you can directly use your favorite text editor(vim, nano, even emacs...!) to edit ~/.wine/user.reg.

Book One: Wine tastes good! Basic setup of wine:

check if your system is OK! this means that you should be sure that both your hardware is working properly, and that your system is configured correctly. some useful programs for doing so are: memtest86 (also nowadays included on many Live C Ds and Install Discs) 3D Mark 2006 (yes, in windows, just to be sure that your system is sane) IBM/Hitachis Drive Fitness Test

start winecfg, click through the menus and adjust the settings to your preference

check if your system is OK!

in the graphics section: uncheck "mouse capturing" (if existent there) check "allow Window manager to decorate windows" check "allow Window manager to control windows" uncheck "emulate a virtual display/desktop" set "vertex shader support" to "hardware" check "allow pixel shader" set DPI to a value of your liking, I kept it at 96 dots per inch.

in the audio section: adjust the sound driver you normally use, you should prefer ARTS/ESD/Pulseaudio/JACK(depending on your setup and distribution) because they won't block your audio device! set directsound hardwareaccelleration to full uncheck driver emulation the test-sound function did not work for me, sound itself works! so don't panic if wine spits an error into your face!

have i instructed you jet to check if your system is working correctly? yes? good, thats really important... you know...
Book Two: "Pressing Wine" adjusting wine to work with EU 3 if a value is not jet set or a folder not present, you should create it.

now start "wine regedit" or open ~/.wine/user.reg

navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Direct 3 D/ set REG_SZ Direct Draw Renderer to opengl set REG_SZ Offscreen Rendering Mode to pbuffer set REG_SZ Use GLSL to enabled set REG_SZ Video Memory Size to 128 or more (depending on your gfx card)

navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Direct Sound/ set REG_SZ Max Shadow Size to 0

you have checked if your system and computer are in a perfect condition, right?

navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Dll Overrides/ set REG_SZ d3dx9_36 to native set REG_SZ d3dxof to native set REG_SZ msvcp60 to native this will make wine use our own DL Ls rather than the built in ones. with the built in ones, wine currently crashes EU 3...
Book Three: "Cooking with Wine" adjusting EU 3 to work with Wine

navigate to the directory you want your EU 3 installation in (eg. mkdir ~/.wine/drive_c/eu3 && cd ~/.wine/drive_c/eu3 )

copy the contents of the EU 3 installation on your windows partition to this folder (eg. cp -R /mnt/ntfs_partitions/games/eu3/* . )

change permissions to allow your default user/group to read, write and execute inside this folder. (eg. chown -R my_user:my_group * && chmod -R 770 *)

move or remove the movies folder(the player would crash at startup)

now we have to import the 3 libraries, we set to be used "native" earlier. on a 32Bit windows installation, they are located in on a 64 Bit windows installation they are located both in the above

folder(the 32Bit version), and in only those in Sys WOW 64 are 64Bit and will work on a 64Bit Wine System!

copy them right into the EU 3 gamefolder on your linux partition (eg. cp /mnt/ntfs_partitions/win2k3server/Sys WOW 64/d3dx9_36.dll . ) (eg. cp /mnt/ntfs_partitions/win2k3server/Sys WOW 64/d3dxof.dll . ) (eg. cp /mnt/ntfs_partitions/win2k3server/Sys WOW 64/msvcp60.dll . )
Book Four: "Only those with correct settings.txt do enjoy Wine!" Adapting your settings.ini file

set fullScreen=no

set shadows=no

set multisampling=0

set anisotropicFiltering=0

adjust screen={} to fit well onto your desktop. eg: size={ x=1250 y=950 } i do only have a small informationbar on the bottom of my screens, so EU 3 can use the rest of the display for its window, my screens are set to 1280x1024, you might want to experiment in what fits you and your window manager best.

edit gfx/FX/borders_2_0.fx to remove sea province artifacts go to line 162, replace float4 Terra Incognita = tex2D( Terra Incognita Filtered, v.vTexCoord0 ); with float4 Terra Incognita = float4( 1, 1, 1, 0 ); this will change the seaboarders so that they are displayed correctly in white. you can also change them to dark-grey: float4 Terra Incognita = float4( 0, 0, 0, 0 ); but then the seaboarders will also be visible in terra-incognita

edit terrain_2_0.fx to remove land border distortion go to line 481, replace float4 Terra Incognita = tex2D( Terra Incognita Texture Terrain, v.vBorderTexCoord0 ); with float4 Terra Incognita = float4( 0, 0, 0, 0 );
At this point, you are ready to start the game by typing: eg: cd your_eu3_directory wine eu3game.exe

You can even load mods without eu3.exe,which will not run because the it requres .NET 2.0, which is currently not supported in wine, by adding "-mod <name_of_the_mod>" to the launch command: eg: wine eu3game.exe -mod TOT_3.0

Have fun with EU 3 running on Linux!
