A joke. For the record, I don’t hate her, but a lot of people seem to.

She could probably do a decent Toph, maybe.

Or Charlyne Yi. Or Michaela Dietz.

She does it looks like, but I think Hollywood is trying to move past having white VAs voice non-white characters.

I assume I won't have heard of any child actor who could play Toph. I'm also rewatching the OG series and it keeps striking me how good the child voice actors are.

Some details for the upcoming ATLA movie are coming from this year’s cinemacon:

  • The movie is officially titled: "Aang: The Last Airbender"
  • Adult Aang will be voiced by Eric Nam
  • The movie’s villain will be voiced by Dave Bautista

Eric Nam acting-employed AND Bautista getting an explicitly Asian role*, we love to see it.

* assuming he isn’t voicing a Water Tribesman… I’m assuming because two other indigenous actors, Jessica Matten and Roman Zaragoza, are included in the announcement. So that is nice.

Perfect villain casting at least. Do we know which Nation he's from?

[up]x4: Apparently Dionne Quan is mentioned among the other voice actors, and it speculated to play Toph.

Very impressive considering Quan hasn't had a role in a while, and she's an experienced blind voice actress at that.

Jessica Matten and Román Zaragoza are the other voice actors revealed at CinemaCon.

[up][up]Nope, we still know nothing about the plot of this movie.

I don’t think we even know if it takes place before any of their kids are born yet.

Dionne Quan will be voicing Toph

TIL that apparently her biggest role until now was Kimi from Rugrats.

And I didn't even know the voice of Kimi from Rugrats was legally blind until today. Whoa. surprised

[up][up] Ditto. Speaking of Trixie, seeing the news that Dionne Quan might be voicing Toph reminds me of this bit of fanart showing Trixie dressed as Toph.

If those claims about Dionne Quan voicing Toph in the movie are true, then I guess it would count as an example of Disabled Character, Disabled Actor.

The tweet from Rob Keyes says it’s the first of a trilogy? I wonder if they’re still doing the other two standalone films, then?

I think the other two films might be a Korra sequel and a pilot for the next Earth Avatar and their series.

I know a Korra movie is in the cards but I thought the third was supposed to be about a past Avatar (possibly Kiyoshi). Or was that still vague and unconfirmed?

[up][up][up] A Nick executive said a few years ago that they were making a trilogy. Whether that means three stand alone films or films with an ongoing story remains unclear.

[up] Nothing is known about any future movies , anything you've heard is a rumor. There has been no announcement about a Korra movie or one about Kyoshi. There was some speculation because voice actors were cast as characters from the Kyoshi novels, but that was actually for an expansion of the Avatar Generations mobile game.

Well, that's one way of using Avatar for Fortnite - use their comic book appearance.

...which is fine until the character lines make it sound like they're Season 1 Avatar.

I was playing around with Chat GPT for the first time, and I noticed it seems to be very good at analysing fictional settings, and making suggestions for alternative universes.

So I asked it what it would be like if Toph was the Avatar:

Imagining Azula as the Avatar instead of Aang would drastically alter the narrative of "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Here's a scenario that explores how the story might unfold:

Discovery of Azula as the Avatar: Azula is revealed to be the Avatar at a young age, much like Aang. However, unlike Aang, Azula's upbringing and personality shape her understanding of her role as the Avatar. Raised in the Fire Nation royal family, Azula is taught to embrace her power and dominance, viewing her Avatar status as a means to enforce Fire Nation supremacy.

Fire Nation Dominance: Azula's status as the Avatar bolsters the Fire Nation's military might, as she becomes a powerful weapon of conquest for Fire Lord Ozai. Under his guidance, Azula leads the Fire Nation armies in a campaign to subjugate the other nations, using her bending prowess and Avatar abilities to crush all who oppose her.

Opposition and Rebellion: As the Fire Nation's power grows, resistance movements emerge across the world, led by individuals determined to challenge Azula's rule. Among them are Sokka, Katara, and Toph, who band together with allies from other nations to oppose the Fire Nation's tyranny and restore balance to the world.

Internal Struggle: Despite her outward confidence and strength, Azula grapples with inner turmoil and conflict as she struggles to reconcile her duties as the Avatar with her loyalty to the Fire Nation. As she confronts the consequences of her actions and witnesses the suffering caused by her quest for power, Azula begins to question her role in the world and the path she has chosen.

Spiritual Awakening: Throughout her journey, Azula seeks guidance from past Avatars and spiritual mentors, including her uncle Iroh, who encourages her to embrace compassion and humility. Through her spiritual journey, Azula gains a deeper understanding of her connection to the world and the importance of balance in the Avatar cycle.

Redemption and Transformation: As Azula confronts her inner demons and faces the consequences of her actions, she undergoes a profound transformation, renouncing her allegiance to the Fire Nation and embracing her role as the Avatar of all nations. With the support of her friends and allies, Azula works to undo the damage caused by her past actions and restore harmony to the world.

Final Showdown: In a climactic showdown with Fire Lord Ozai, Azula confronts her father and former mentor, challenging his vision of dominance and conquest. With the strength of her Avatar powers and the support of her allies, Azula defeats Ozai and brings an end to the Fire Nation's reign of terror, ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity for all nations.

Overall, the story of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" with Azula as the Avatar would explore themes of power, redemption, and the struggle for identity. Through Azula's journey, we would witness the transformative power of self-discovery and the ability to overcome darkness with compassion and strength.

Toph's personality and blindness would profoundly influence her abilities and identity as the Avatar, adding layers of complexity and uniqueness to her character:

Enhanced Earthbending Mastery: Toph's blindness would heighten her connection to the earth element, as she relies on seismic sense to perceive her surroundings. This heightened sensitivity allows her to detect subtle vibrations in the earth, giving her unparalleled mastery over earthbending techniques. As the Avatar, Toph's proficiency in earthbending would be unmatched, allowing her to bend massive amounts of earth and reshape the terrain with precision and power.

Challenges with Other Elements: Toph's blindness may present challenges in mastering the other elements, particularly waterbending and airbending, which rely heavily on visual cues and movements. However, Toph's determination and adaptability would enable her to overcome these obstacles, finding innovative ways to connect with and manipulate these elements through touch, sound, and intuition.

Unique Avatar Style: Toph's earthbending-centric approach to bending would shape her unique Avatar style, characterized by strength, stability, and groundedness. She would prioritize defensive techniques and strategic maneuvers, utilizing the earth element to shield herself and her allies from harm while simultaneously launching powerful counterattacks against her enemies.

Spiritual Growth and Insight: Toph's journey as the Avatar would be deeply spiritual, as she seeks to connect with the spiritual world and commune with past Avatars. Despite her initial skepticism and pragmatism, Toph's encounters with the spirit world and her interactions with spiritual guides would provide her with profound insights and wisdom, deepening her understanding of her role as the Avatar and her connection to the cosmos.

Identity and Representation: As a blind Avatar, Toph would serve as a powerful symbol of resilience, determination, and representation for individuals with disabilities. Her journey to mastery and self-discovery would resonate with audiences, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and diversity in storytelling and celebrating the strength and capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

Overall, Toph's personality and blindness would not only shape her abilities and identity as the Avatar but also serve as a source of strength and inspiration, driving her to overcome obstacles and fulfill her destiny as the protector of the world. Her journey would be a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and self-belief, inspiring others to embrace their own unique strengths and capabilities.

Certainly an intriguing AU.

Optimism is a duty.

I could see Toph being the Avatar in a scenario. If Aang died in Sozin's genocide then you'd have to have an interim waterbender Avatar in hiding (possibly never identified as the Avatar) during the Hundred Year War. Who then died at just the right time for Toph to be born as the new earthbender Avatar.

You could also have a firebender Avatar AU by inserting an offscreen earthbender Avatar after the offscreen waterbender Avatar during the Hundred Year War.

I think it's just the waterbender characters that would be... tricky to pull off an "X is the Avatar" scenario with.
