YMMV / Woods of Ypres

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The band has a huge catalog of amazing music, but most will say Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Light is best contender.
  • Broken Base: Woods IV: The Green Album isn't very liked by the metal community and is seen as very inferior in comparison to the very intense album of Woods 3.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: David Gold's mother, Esther Gold, affectionately called "Mama Gold" by the fans is this. Considering she connects to the fans like her son always did and even speaks about how he's always with them and her. Can sometimes veer into heartwarming to tearjerking for a mourning mother...
  • Epileptic Trees: When Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Light came out, fans theorized that David Gold may have known his time was coming, considering the sheer foreshadowing of his impending death and the concept of mourning the dead but focusing on the living, especially with the final track "Alternative Ending" ('Back on the highway...'), considering how he passed. Fans have either thought this as either Gold knowing he was going to pass or was sheer coincidence.
    • A darker theory is that David was Driven to Suicide, considering as one sees the lasts twitter posts he had some pretty Tear Jerker and upsetting posts regarding how emotional Woods 5 was for him and the sheer thought of life and suffering. However fans usually dismiss this theory out of respect for Gold's family (specifically his mother).
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Everything off of Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Light is about not focusing on death and looking at what's your life becomes painful when you learn what happened to David Gold.
    • "I Was Buried In Mount Pleasant Cemetery". Nuff said.
    • "Wet Leather".
"Life is just pain and piss
It's nothing that I will miss."
  • Heartwarming Moments: Oddly enough, "Dirty Window of Opportunity: "Can You Get Here in 10 Days?"" pretty much states to recover from your pain and suffering, as like a challenge to heal your wounds and see if you either want to return to your old life or redo it.
    • Woods 5 might as well be called "Live Life to the Fullest: The Album".
  • Narm / Narm Charm: With David Gold's tendencies to be very emotionally raw in his lyrics, a lot of their discography can have these; "Wet Leather" in particular has the cheesy line "Life is just pain and piss".
    • The two music videos the band made - for "The Northern Cold" and "I Was Buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery" - are also subject to this, with the video for "The Northern Cold" specifically reminding some fans of a certain Norwegian black metal band's videos.
    • The entirety of the song "Move On", considering the incredibly Wangst about a woman leaving you.
  • Signature Song: "Your Ontario Town is a Burial Ground", "The Northern Cold", "Kiss My Ashes (Goodbye)", "Lightning and Snow".
  • Tear Jerker: "Shards of Love".
    • "I Was Buried In Mount Pleasant Cemetery", ever so much.
    • "By the Time You Read This (I Will Already Be Dead)", pretty much borderlines Driven to Suicide.
    • Everything off of Woods 5 is this, due to the sheer Harsher in Hindsight of David's passing.
    • David's passing is just tragic, considering nobody saw it coming and he was even in the middle of finishing up Woods 5. Those who got a chance to interact with David considered him a very Nice Guy, and to see him gone is devastating.
      • More darker theories range that David could have committed suicide due to how bleak he was on Twitter, but those theories are usually thrown out the window out of respect for him and his family.
  • The Woobie: Oh David..
