YMMV / Vicky the Viking

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: For all their success in the 1960s, the original novels were displaced by the subsequent anime version, which was really huge.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • Not unlike Maya the Bee, the original animated show achieved its greatest popularity in Germany, to the point of having a whole area themed afer it at Europa-Park, Germany's biggest and most famous amusement park.
    • As a whole, Vicky is much more popular in Germany and Japan than in Sweden. It has enough of an influence in Japan that the creator of One Piece was inspired by it.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Out of jealousy, Gilby challenges Vicky to a wolf hunt. During hunting, Vicky fails to capture a wolf and has to run away. Then, a forest fire erupts and the village is in danger. Vicky uses the water tap system he invented episodes earlier to put out the fire. He then saves Gilby, who was trapped in the fire. In the aftermath, Vicky lets out a sigh of disappointment because he failed yet again at capturing a wolf. Gilby then rebukes him, praising that it was Vicky's courage that saved the village and his life. Everyone cheers and applauds at Vicky, who had regained his smile, as he was triumphantly being carried away by the crowd.
  • Toy Ship: Between Vicky and Ylvie especially in the musical and Live-Action film.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: It can be hard to tell from first glance that Vicky is supposed to be a boy. The name doesn't help. (Though this is averted in the original Swedish, where he is named "Vicke," a boy's name.) The English dub of the newer series shortens his name to Vic, probably for this reason.
