YMMV / The Walking Dead S06 E16 "Last Day on Earth"

Go To

  • Better on DVD: Ever since Season 7 finished airing on TV, subsequent reactions have been slightly more positive towards this episode, as viewers say that the psychological horror and emotional resonance is amplified if this episode, along with the next episode resolving this episode's cliffhanger, are watched back-to-back.
  • Broken Base:
    • The build up of the episode has proven divisive. It's praised by some as being a masterful way of building tension, as Rick and crew slowly realize that the Saviors have them outmatched. Others criticized the episode for largely consisting of the characters driving around, and felt the group's encounters with the Savior's roadblocks were repetitive. Several fans from both sides have agreed that the build up would've sat better with viewers if there had actually been pay-off.
    • Jeffrey Dean Morgan's portrayal of Negan. While many feel he played the role to perfection and was one of the episodes' highlights, others feel that he's too reserved when compared to how energetic Negan is in the comics. Some also feel that he lacks the build to properly convey Negan's physical presence. In the home release version of the episode as well as in the following season, Negan raises his voice far more often and is more energetic, and is overall far more faithful to the comics.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The comic version of Negan's introduction continues to be hailed as a bold, incredible and awesome moment in the series that everyone will speak fondly of. That certainly is not the case here with the television adaptation of the scene, as evidenced by the rest of this YMMV page.
  • Narm: The cheesy use of blood trickling down the camera has been compared to the use in James Bond openings.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Any strength of the episode has been largely ignored by the extremely controversial use of a cliffhanger in this finale.
