YMMV / The New Batman Adventures E12 "Over the Edge"

Go To

  • Broken Base: While a number of fans consider it one of the best episodes in Batman: The Animated Series due to the episode's Bad Future premise, others found it to be one of the most overrated episodes, with issues ranging from the episode's writing (for instance, one scene has various villains appear on a talk show to announce that they are suing Bruce Wayne, claiming that Batman was responsible for them being villains, although a previous episode had shown them realizing that they themselves would have resorted to villainy even without him), and the All Just a Dream reveal causing the episode to lose its replay value to some. Others though simply consider it an interesting "what if" episode and begrudgingly accept the ending as a case of Acceptable Breaks from Reality.
  • Fan Fic Fuel:
    • Imagine if this wasn't just a dream? It would make a nice Elseworlds story that covers the ramifications of the events that transpired within the episode.
    • The Batman Beyond comics establish that Barbara gets a relapse of the effects roughly once a year. Perfect hurt/comfort Fic territory. Also, the question of if is it the exact same dream every time or if it changes to reflect her current fears.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Both Batman: Arkham Knight and the plot for season 3 of Arrow, most notably, the episode "Public Enemy", involve similar plot points to this episode—and in both cases, most of those were events that really happened instead of being a nightmare a character has.
    • In Arkham Knight, as in this episode, the villain is the Scarecrow and Commissioner Gordon, like his animated counterpart, gets angry with Bruce for keeping Barbara's double life from him, Bruce gets outed as Batman, and the game ends with Bruce presumed dead. About the only thing tied to it that was still a side effect of Crane's toxin involved a character hallucinating Barbara dying (in Knight's case, Bruce himself seeing a fear toxin-dosed Barbara committing suicide), only for the real Barbara to turn up alive and well.
    • Season 3 of Arrow starts with the death of Sara Lance and both Ollie and Sara's sister Laurel deciding to hide this from Quentin, only for Quentin to get pissed at the both of them when he learns the truth and starts a crusade against Ollie once Ra's al Ghul starts a campaign to discredit Ollie by both framing the Arrow and revealing Ollie's identity to Quentin. While Sara would later be resurrected, the only thing that kept Ollie's identity a secret is Roy deciding to take the fall.
    • Even worse still is the Batman Beyond episode "Eyewitness", which sees Barbara herself go the very extremes she feared her father would when Spellbinder makes her think Terry killed Mad Stan.
      • Though her sour relationship with Bruce may have clouded her judgment.
    • The Batman Beyond tie-in comics show that Barbara still has some scars from this episode's ordeal, even decades later.
    • A year after this episode was released in real life, professional wrestler Owen Hart fell to his death falling 70 feet from the rafters during a live World Wrestling Federation pay-per-view. The date? May 23rd. The Name of the pay-per-view? Over The Edge.
      • What is even more eerie is that fact that he was set to make an entrance from atop of the rafters as part of his portrayal of the Blue Blazer, a superhero gimmick.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Once Batgirl was killed off and the show's status quo was completely upended, it wasn't hard for viewers to guess that the episode would turn out to be All Just a Dream.
