YMMV / The Land Before Time II: The Great Valley Adventure

Go To

  • Franchise Original Sin: Later movies and the TV series would take flack for softening up the Sharpteeth, with them generally coming off as significantly less menacing and dangerous than the memorably nightmare-inducing Big Bad of the original movie. This trend actually got its start here, with Chomper's parents being considerably less antagonistic than the first movie's Prehistoric Monster by virtue of being motivated by wanting to save their baby, along with not being shown in quite as scary a light. However, this got less criticism for two reasons. First, it established another side to these predators, showing that they were also capable of caring for one another rather than just being one-note killing machines. Second, Chomper's parents were still convincingly threatening, with their mere presence in the Great Valley being treated as a major crisis and them not suffering the downright humiliating defeats many later Sharpteeth would go through. It also helps that they're the ones to deal with secondary villains Ozzy and Strut, possibly fatally, showing that they are not to be taken lightly.
    • While later films would be more heavily criticized for it, it’s also here that the singing and musical element of the franchise, as well as the Lighter and Softer tone, was introduced.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The movie has a pair of T. rex trying to retrieve their child, beating The Lost World: Jurassic Park to the idea by three years.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Strut suddenly does this when he tries to kill both Littlefoot and Chomper by throwing them off the wall between the Great Valley and the Mysterious Beyond. Luckily, Chomper's parents come in to "save the day".
  • Narm: Ducky's egg conveniently and implausibly rolling all the way back to her nest after Strut drops it during the rock slide.
  • Squick:
    • Chomper eating a flying insect with fluid from the big dripping from its mouth.
    • Strut accidentally biting into a rock mistaking it for an egg. Hilarious as it is.
    • The sinking sand getting stuck to Ducky's foot. Her comment is "Ew!".
  • Sweetness Aversion: As the first sequel, elements of this are introduced into the franchise here. Special mention goes to the song “One Of Us Now”, which really creates cavities.
  • Tough Act to Follow: Being the sequel to follow the original film, it’s inevitable that this film would be considered a drop in quality over it’s predecessor.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: It's hard to see Strut continually fail to get his meal. Of course, this doesn't excuse his attempt to kill Littlefoot.
