YMMV / The Dark Side of Hansel and Gretel

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: "I got some big candies.".
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Hansel and Gretel's parents abandoning them in the woods to die.
    • The people in the strange house allowing Gretel to join their "dance".
  • Nausea Fuel:
    • Gretel's continued romantic advances towards Hansel. Even worse in the Bad End, where she actually gets to act on her incestuous delusions.
    • The orgy in the woods that seemingly has no trouble letting children join in.
  • Nightmare Retardant: In the You're Still Alive? ending, when Gretel notices Hansel has witnessed her betrayal, she looks right at him. And then gives a Laughably Evil snicker. It dampens the creepiness-factor slightly.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The game's story is incredibly dark and hopeless and unlike its predecessor it doesn't even have one good ending. All the endings are Downer Endings that have Hansel and Gretel either killed or trapped in extremely unpleasant situations. It makes the game somewhat hard to really enjoy, if you're not the kind of person who is into grimdark.
  • The Woobie: Hansel. He just wanted to protect his sister, but the world at large seems determined to not give him a happy ending. In the majority of endings he finds himself Dying Alone and abandoned with the knowledge that his parents hated him and his sister enough to just leave them to starve in the woods. In one ending, it turns out the sister he did so much for never loved him and was in cahoots with his Abusive Parents from the beginning on. And in the A Happy Tales ending, he ends up a prisoner of his insane sister, with her outright stating that she'll make him into her Sex Slave.
