• Critical Dissonance: Critics have generally found the movie to be So Average, It's Okay (as of George Clooney previous three films) but audiences have been very favorable in their reviews. The critics' rating of the film on Rotten Tomatoes is 57%, while the audience score is 96%.
• Fanfic Fuel: Of the 9 boys in the boat, Shorty, Chuck, Jim, Gordy, and Johnny have practically no screentime and no defined personalities. Fans are taking to making up backstories and personalities for these Out of Focus boys, or extrapolating from the book.
• Friendly Fandoms: With Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and Masters of the Air, collectively known as the HBO War fandom, due to similarity in the historical setting, focus on bonds of friendship between young men, and Callum Turner in a lead role in both The Boys in the Boat and Masters of the Air.
• Token Romance: Joe and Joyce's relationship doesn't contribute anything to the main rowing plot, nor does it really flesh out Joe as a character much, but it does add some heartwarming moments and allows for a female character in an otherwise all male cast.
