YMMV / Sonic Forces Overclocked

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The full soundtrack of Overclocked consists of a bunch of amazing remixes of various tracks from Forces, which were already pretty great, along with a number of original tracks that wouldn't sound out of place.
    • The game's opening title theme, "Reawakened Impact" is incredibly foreboding and haunting, with the vocals, piano, orchestra, and techno synth setting the mood.
    • Sunset Heights gets remixed as "Engulfed in Phantom Flames ...for City Siege" which plays more into the rock-techno infused feeling of the original, which makes it for a thrilling track as Sonic runs through the bombarded city and faces off against Infinite's illusions.
    • The track heard during the final level of the mod, "Cosmic Rock ...for Meteor Rush" is an intense rock remix of "Egg Gate" from the original, infusing it with an energy that makes the level feel like it was taken from Final Rush or Final Chase Sonic Adventure 2.
    • The game's main theme and final boss track is an original song called "Overclocked (feat. KØNTAGIØN)", which is a metal rock track that is intense and is fitting for a final clash between Sonic, the Rookie, and their dark mirrors.
    • Metal Sonic's solo level track, "The Empire's Sharpened Claws ...for Lost Citadel", is a hard and pumping rock track that incorporates the riffs of "Stardust Speedway US" from Sonic CD.
  • Cliché Storm: Regardless of how the original story of Forces was received, players such as Pariah695 have criticized the story of Overclocked as coming off as rather generic and uninspired, with Sonic's dialogue being viewed as overly quippy and unnatural, along with the mod using some common fanfiction cliches such as frequently hyping up Neo Metal Sonic as one of the two greatest threats of the story, repeating exposition to the audience, and the protagonists and antagonists being mirror images of one another— Neo Metal Sonic and Infinite are meant to be reflections of Sonic and the Avatar, being a constantly bickering duo in contrast to the teamwork done by the heroes— in a way that isn't very deep or compelling. As such, some view Overclocked as a Play the Game, Skip the Story situation.
  • Even Better Sequel: While it may be a fan game, it does improve on several of the criticisms of the main game, such as the longer length of the levels and more varied paths, and for giving Infinite a larger overall presence.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Why did Infinite summon Black Doom with the Phantom Ruby? To make Shadow suffer on a personal level, as Black Doom is the hedgehog's most personal foe. How does Infinite know about Black Doom? Considering the fact the Black Arms invaded the entire world, it's very easy to suggest Infinite already knew about the aliens. He possibly read about Black Doom on the Egg-net, the same way he found out about Zavok and Chaos. That said, Black Doom doesn't appear in the final mod's release.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The mod makes an outstanding use of both remixed assets and entirely new assets, as well as taking advantage of the Hedgehog Engine 2's lighting system; for example, "Lost Citadel", which is a level in Eggman Empire Fortress, takes place in a gorgeous sunset, as opposed to the original game's downcast aesthetic.
