YMMV / Scooby-Doo: Mystery Mayhem

Go To

  • Critical Dissonance: Critics gave each version of the game mixed reviews, but players leaned more towards the positive side.
  • It's Easy, So It Sucks!: One of the game's major problems is how simplistic the gameplay is, since it largely consists of just platforming, finding key items to proceed, and avoiding/capturing ghosts. Barring a Difficulty Spike here and there, the game doesn't really present much of a challenge.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: A criticism the game faced was that it doesn't take too long to finish. If one were to do a longrun, the game would take almost three-and-a-half hours to complete.
  • The Problem with Licensed Games: A minor case. People agree that Mystery Mayhem isn't bad by any means, especially for a Licensed Game, but its simplistic gameplay and mechanics probably won't make it worthwhile unless you're within the age demographic or a hardcore Scooby-Doo fan.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: Since this is a Scooby-Doo video game that involves Scooby and Shaggy capturing ghosts and other supernatural creatures with a magic artifact, the game can be considered the closest thing to a Licensed Game of The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo.
  • That One Level: The second level, "Mayhem at the Movies", has a segment where, depending on the whether you're playing the console version or the handheld version, either Shaggy or Scooby will get captured and forces the player to play as the other character alone. If Shaggy is the one to be captured, playing as Scooby can be difficult since Shaggy is the only one who can use the Tome of Doom, so you're left at the mercy of enemies (though you get a Megaphone to stun enemies so you can slip by) and being a single character makes it easier to experience a game over.
  • That One Puzzle: Anybody that's played the console versions of the game will likely cite it as having one of the most dreaded examples. Bad Juju in the Bayou has a section early on where you have to direct enough water to the fountain so you can get to the next area. To do this, you have to go into the Waterworks and push the pipes so they connect in a certain way. Except you also get around the waterworks this way too and the game gives you no hints as to how the pipes are connected.
  • Underused Game Mechanic: The mechanic of switching between Shaggy and Scooby in the console version sees little use in-game despite it being focused on in the tutorial. Since Scooby can do everything Shaggy can do and has the exclusive abilities of fitting through tight spaces and swimming in water in Bad Juju in the Bayou, there's never any reason to play as Shaggy. The GBA version on the other hand has Shaggy being the only one who can use the Tome of Doom while Scooby is the only one who can use the gadgets.
