YMMV / Rick And Morty S 7 E 10 Fear No Mort

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: Replacing your loved ones with a different version of themselves is a futile and unproductive way to move on from your loss. This is most exemplified at the end where showcases the difference with Rick and Mr. Poopybutthole: Despite initially wanting to risk going into the hole to see a version of his wife, Rick ultimately decides to take Morty’s warning to heart and leave with a peace of mind, while Mr. Poopybutthole despite having went through an entire episode of learning to not make a situation worse decides to replace a version of himself just to get a version of his family, and may development into unforeseen consequences if Amy’s look of suspicion is any indication.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • When the two initially discuss how the hole might work, Morty muses that having too dangerous/lethal of an attraction would be bad for business. Rick counters that money must not be too high a priority given they have not spent anything on upgrading the decades old VCR.
    • It's also likely that the amount of photos put up are not accurate since Morty was too exhausted from the experience to bother and Rick had to put it up for him.
    • With the revelation that it's been Morty in the Hole alone the entire time, how much of the Hole Avatar's Breaking Speech about happiness was something it believes in and how much of it was specifically to rile up Morty, taking direct shots at its current victim's fears and insecurities?
  • Evil Is Cool: The Fear Hole played by Liev Schreiber is a terrifyingly effective and chilling figure who manages to turn the show's usual expectations and formulas on their head without missing a beat.
  • Fridge Logic: If Morty was the only one in the Hole the whole time, then why is the Hole showing scenes of Rick and Diane without Morty? Are we led to assume this is what Morty imagines would be happening between Rick and Diane which would make him even more afraid due to thinking himself responsible for ruining Rick's happiness as Hole Rick suggested.
    • It should have been pretty easy for Morty to figure out that not being accepted wasn't his real fear, if he could put himself in lots of situations without feeling that bad about it.
  • Magnificent Bastard: The Fear Hole is a manipulative yet affable entity that helps people face their worst fears, while also feeding off of them. When Morty jumps into the hole, it creates a manifestation of Rick to accompany him and repeatedly tricks him into thinking that he escaped, only to pull him back in when he is confronted with a new fear. When Morty finally realizes that his greatest fear is Rick not valuing him, the hole frees him, telling him that his fear of relying on Rick has been delicious. While Morty comes out less burdened, he is also left shaken by the experience.
