- Author's Saving Throw: One of the most criticized aspects of Misty's character in the original series was her near-constant abuse of Psyduck, which people found too cruel to be funny, especially since Psyduck seems to have a genuine medical condition over why they weren't useful in battle. This episode rectifies that by showing that Misty has long since grown to become quite attached and affectionate towards Psyduck and in turn, Psyduck seems to have (mostly) gotten over its condition and learned to become a pretty decent fighter in its own right.
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Misty and Brock once again claim that they only gave Ash badges out of "pity". It's treated as taking the wind out of Ash's sails, for being cocky about getting all the Kanto badges. There's several problems with this. One- Ash wasn't even being that cocky to begin with. His Alola friends asked him if he got all the badges and he said yes. That's all. Two- Ash may not have won his matches for his first two gym badges, but Misty and Brock didn't win either.note . Third- the biggest problem with Misty's claim is that she's now outright lying by claiming that she gave Ash her badge because she felt sorry for him, implying that she won their match, back in season one. None of these claims are true and everyone knows it. Rather than looking like Ash's oldest friends, reeling him in when he's getting ahead of himself, Misty and Brock look more like they're just putting Ash down to make themselves look good in front of the other kids. While it could be put down to the script writer being ignorant of what really happened in the episode being referenced, in universe, Misty and Brock certainly don't seem like very good friends.
