YMMV / Mysterious Island

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: Pencroft being a Confederate soldier who ends up accompanying the protagonists rather than a Union soldier is an invention of this story, but has been included in both subsquent TV movie adaptions.
  • Spiritual Successor: In no small part due to the appearance of the Nautilus, this film is sometimes considered to be an unofficial sequel to Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It may have even been intentional on Columbia's part, as they even wanted James Mason to reprise his role of Captain Nemo.
    • That is for sure the intent, as Verne's novel basically tells us what happened to Nemo and his crew after the maelstrom. The film gives Nemo a lot more screen time. While in the novel, he assists the castaways numerous times, unseen, he only reveals himself near the very end, while on his deathbed. He gives the castaways some treasure, passes away shortly after, and they scuttle the Nautilus as Nemo's "coffin" since it's stuck in the cave it's in and can no longer leave the island.
