** That is for sure the intent, as Verne's novel basically tells us what happened to Nemo and his crew after the maelstrom. [[spoiler: The film gives Nemo a lot more screen time. While in the novel, he assists the castaways numerous times, unseen, he only reveals himself near the very end, while on his deathbed. He gives the castaways some treasure, passes away shortly after, and they scuttle the Nautilus as Nemo's "coffin" since it's stuck in the cave it's in and can no longer leave the island.]]
