YMMV / My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S7 E9 "Honest Apple"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Strawberry Sunrise really hate apples, or was merely trolling Applejack to demonstrate how brutal honesty can be hurtful? Or is she just exaggerating her dislike to help Rarity make her point? Or was she simply stating her honest opinion, no more and no less? It bears mentioning that initially, she simply states she doesn't like apples, and only gets increasingly nasty as Applejack does.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Rarity's rock guitar solo. It (1) is so unexpected that even Pinkie is shocked, (2) is never brought up again, and (3) does not affect the rest of the episode in any way.
  • Broken Base: Opinions are split over who has to take the blame. Rarity, who picked Applejack of all ponies as judge for a fashion show in the first place? Applejack, who grabbed the Jerkass Ball and crossed the line by insulting fashion in general? Or both because of the general storytelling (especially with the episode being written by a first-time writer for the show)?
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Of the stylist trio, the gothic mare Inky Rose, due to her distinctive design and dark/quirky personality. Her slight resemblance to Maud Pie may help.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: This comic was almost a year in advance before this episode confirmed that Rarity does kiss greetings with her associates in the fashion industry.
  • Informed Wrongness: Applejack's comments are supposed to be insulting and not make make sense in the context of a fashion show. But her mistaking "artfully" messy hair for real messy hair is somewhat understandable. And considering how often real live women had wardrobe malfunctions in front of a crowd or camera because the dress was too odd to be worn properly, Applejack's obsession with practicality seems somewhat less irrational.
  • Memetic Mutation: The brief few seconds of Rarity shredding heavy metal electric guitar (on an acoustic guitar with only two strings) has lent itself to lots of videos and image macros, putting music and lyrics to her playing.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Strawberry Sunrise doesn't even have a minute of screentime, but she's so over the top with how smug she is about her hatred of apples and her false modesty to Applejack that her scene ended up being memorable to many fans, with several of them starting to portray her as Applejack's Sitcom Arch-Nemesis in fan works.
