YMMV / Mario.exe: The Mushroom Kingdom's Doom

Go To

  • Epileptic Trees: The open ended nature of the game and the cryptic nature of nearly every conversation and scene in the game opens itself to these.
  • That One Boss: The Luigi Solo Final Boss is a particularly insane challenge for being a bad end boss, for two reasons; it's a Marathon Boss, and you are a One-Hit-Point Wonder.
    • It starts off with Mario.exe floating around in the air while Bowser.exe shoots flames down from the top; the rapid movement of Mario.exe and the slowness of your flames makes him difficult to hit, and the unpredictability of Bowser's flames ensures a difficult time.
    • The second phase has him bring in Wario.exe, who can block your flames and flies left to right in the middle of the screen, and Yoshi.exe, who moves as fast as Mario.exe and is practically guaranteed to get the drop on you in the first two seconds if you don't immediately move to the right. Dodging the flames and the .exes is nigh-impossible; your only real option is to go to the far right where no flames will hit, but since Mario.exe never goes there, it becomes a Goddamned Boss as you must continually be careful and take Mario.exe's massive health bar, ensuring you will be at it for a while. Going too far in any direction will push you off the screen, forcing you to restart the game. And although the fight gives you the option to try again, sometimes it glitches and boots you back to the first phase.
    • But there's more — Mario.exe then summons Bowletta. She moves around erratically like Mario.exe and shoots flames herself, necessitating careful jumping so you don't run into either the flames or her.
    • And even after that, it's still not over — Bowletta chases you through a hallway similar to the ones at the end of every stage, with faceless Marios blocking your path, and in perhaps the biggest 'screw you', losing this segment traps you in the bad ending, forcing you to go through the Luigi Solo path all over again.
    • Also worth nothing that this is the only boss fight in the game to allow the player to freely continue. Not even the also difficult final boss fight gives you that luxury.
  • That One Level: The first chase segment with Yoshi in the Best Ending is disproportionately difficult relative to the other heroes' first chase segments, being much longer and having much more obstacles in the way in the form of Mario.exe clones. There are a lot of them, strewn in locations that mandate precise jumping and trial and error, while the spike wall is still coming. Bottom line, you'll probably spend a bit of time on this one.
