• Ho Yay: In New Year's, Aurit claims Jason has "some kind of homoerotic fixation on Nate." Perhaps that why he objects to Nate dating Hannah.
• Jerkass Woobie: We're not given a lot of reasons to like Elisa. She's a Spoiled Brat in Nate's eyes, but it's hard not to sympathize with her in her heartbroken state.
• Unintentional Period Piece: In a novel about modern dating, internet dating is mentioned exactly once (Eugene remarks "I'm thinking about going online" to find a girlfriend). This places the narrative within a span of years when internet dating existed but before the dating apps boom.
• The Woobie: To quote this review by Sasha Weiss, "It’s awful to watch a woman as lovely as Hannah shrivel under Nate’s appraising, unpredictable gaze."
  • Justine. She had an unhappy child with an "asshole" stepfather, she has no hope for a better future, and her ex-boyfriend was emotionally abusive. Nate has sex with her only because he feels bad for her.
