YMMV / Louis de Funès

Go To

  • Comedy Ghetto: De Funès never got any award that wasn't honorary (he received a Honorary César in 1980, presented to him by Jerry Lewis), but he didn't care, he only cared about making audiences laugh.
  • Critical Dissonance: Unless he was under the direction of Gérard Oury, De Funès was despised by French critics most of the time during and after the rise of the French New Wave, which created something akin to a Comedy Ghetto. That didn't prevent him from being one of the most successful and beloved French actors of the twentieth century, nor did it prevent his most iconic films from still being a fixture in French popular culture and enjoying countless reruns on French TV every year with high audience rates every time, even decades after his death.
  • Critic-Proof: His late 1970s-early 1980s movies were not critical darlings at all and are generally considered worse than his 1960s-to-mid-1970s efforts, yet they still attracted crowds in French theaters and still gather many viewers whenever they're broadcast on TV.
  • Fountain of Memes:
    • His movies are eminently quotable (as are his facial tics), and are frequently seen in the productions of the French Youtube Poop community and in videos ranting about French politics (or really just any kind of rant).
    • There's also been a memetic string of Youtube videos with footage of De Funès driving cars racing against characters from The Fast and the Furious (with titles such as "Fast & Funès").
