YMMV / Led Zeppelin IV

Go To

  • Epic Riff: Play anyone the drum intro of "When the Levee Breaks" and they will immediately know what song it is. The Echoing Acoustics help, but Bonham's drumming would be unmistakable anyway. Bonham is still considered by critics and fellow musicians as one of the greatest drummers in rock history.
  • Epileptic Trees: Whatever "Stairway to Heaven" is about, which could be anything from a Rich Bitch, to simply being Word Salad Lyrics, to The Lord of the Rings.
  • Fan Nickname: "Led Zeppelin IV" — or, somewhat less commonly, "Zoso" or "The Ruins".
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • "When the Levee Breaks" after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and... the levees broke. When the levee broke, the people of New Orleans didn't have any place to stay. The song is actually about the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927, as it is a reworking of a Delta blues song from that era, but these days it's hard to associate the image of levees breaking with anything but Hurricane Katrina. Harsher still, the fact that A Perfect Circle covered it a year before the tragedy.
    • Sandy Denny, who lent some vocals on the album — which includes "Stairway to Heaven" — died a few years later after falling down a flight of stairs.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: "Stairway to Heaven" has the lyric "There's a sign on the wall..." Thanks to Wayne's World, some guitar shops have actually hung signs on their walls saying "NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN" due to shoppers overplaying the song while trying out guitars.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Folk singer Sandy Denny's vocals on "The Battle of Evermore" — the only Zeppelin guest singer.
  • Sacred Cow: Zig-zagged with "Stairway to Heaven", due to its status as one of the greatest songs of all time. While saying that it's overplayed or that it lifts its intro from "Taurus" by Spirit is acceptable, calling it a bad song, on the other hand, is bound to be asking for trouble. Covering the song can even draw ire among fans and musicians as well.
