YMMV / Harlock: Space Pirate

Go To

  • Foe Yay Shipping:
    • Harlock×Yama is easily one of the most popular ships in the entire Harlock fandom. The appeals of the ship are as clear as crystal.
    • Ezra×Harlock is also a thing, albeit primarily found in Japanese fandom and not nearly as common.
  • Magnificent Bastard: The titular Captain Harlock himself was cursed with immortality as he witnessed the destruction of the planet Earth and in his grief desires to eradicate the universe and allow life to start over. Plotting against the wicked Gaia government, Harlock purloins warheads and deceives all around him to plant the weapons in strategic places, ostensibly allowing him to rewind time and fix the past, swaying hero Yama over with his natural charisma and keeping all in the dark of his true desire to craft a new universe. Only foregoing his plan out of his genuine affection for Yama, Harlock departs after Yama refuses to go through with his destructive plan and allowing the people of Gaia to know the truth about their government, also leaving Yama his ship the Arcadia and mantle of "Harlock" as well.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The movie has a lot of it:
    • The movie's incarnation of the Arcadia is both the strongest and most horrifying of all. A full-blown Eldritch Starship that's powered by dark matter, is nearly impossible to destroy and unleashes a Mook Horror Show in every battle it participates in. Unlike in other version, where the Arcadia looks like a normal ship, this Arcadia has a Giger-esque appearance due to Tochiro's soul merging with the ship.
    • When the Gaia Coalition's holographic projectors are destroyed, Earth is revealed to be a devastated wasteland, covered in spiraling crimson towers of dark matter. The planet is in utter ruin, and the worst thing? Harlock did this. He tried to use the Arcadia to form an impenetrable barrier to keep the Gaians away permanently, but he accidentally wrecked the world instead. Tochiro also died in the incident, leaving Harlock a broken man.
    • Once Harlock exposes Earth's true state, the Gaians go all out in trying to destroy the Arcadia, by using a gigantic Wave-Motion Gun powered by Jupiter's Great Red Spot. The particle beam tears the Moon's north pole asunder when it fires, burning through countless Gaian ships.
