YMMV / Goldstone

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: Practically a motif throughout the final act. Johnny and Maureen both escape Goldstone rather than try to fight Jay. The leader of the Howlers surrenders to Josh after several of his men are gunned down. The Mining Company Security Guard who provides covering fire for Johnny during his escape, and ends up in a Mexican Standoff with Jay, ends up walking away from it and driving off.
  • Contested Sequel: While the film is well-received and generally appreciated, there are a few who think Mystery Road is more interesting as a standalone story and/or dislike the darker direction Jay's life has taken by the time of this film. The fact that some people involved in the filming called Goldstone a Spiritual Sequel rather than an actual sequel helps.
  • He's Just Hiding: Jay's daughter appears to be suffering from Sudden Sequel Death Syndrome, which makes certain parts of the original film feel like a "Shaggy Dog" Story. Given her current status in the interquel, and the amount of dangerous situations the Swan Family is involved in, it could be an example of Faking the Dead that he has to keep up, or I Have No Son! if she hurt him too deeply by falling back into drugs.
  • The Woobie: Mei and the other girls at the brothel. Jay himself is suffering from losses in his family, being sent on a fool's errand by superiors he's managed to alienate, sees a man he'd grown close to murdered and is unable to capture either of the ringleaders.
