YMMV / Engaged to the Unidentified

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Ending: Engaged to the Unidentified remained a relaxed Slice of Life all the way up to its final chapter, and it doesn't so much "come to a conclusion" as simply "stop happening". While there's some emotional wrap-up and a flash-forward to Kobeni and Hakuya's wedding, the manga's stopping point ends up feeling fairly arbitrary. Doubly-so since the final chapter revolves around planning for a party that is never shown, whereas similar events like the school festival and Kobeni's visit to the Mitsumine home spanned multiple chapters. While many readers were supportive of the ending, there was also a contingent (some of whom didn't even realize the manga was ending until the final chapter dropped) who criticized the ending specifically for being an underwhelming Anti-Climax and the manga in general for not taking the romantic development seriously.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Benio. Half the audience finds her hilarious and the other half finds her annoying, creepy, and obstructive to whatever else is going on.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In the first chapter, when Kobeni presses Hakuya on the reason why they're in an arranged marriage, he replies, "Not enough eligible brides in the sticks?" In the last chapter, it's revealed he was most likely testing her memory to see if she remembered offering to marry him before she got amnesia. She doesn't, though. Instead, she freaks out about the prospect of becoming his bride, even though it was her suggestion in the first place.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: A good majority of the fans came to watch the show for the adorable fluffball known as Mashiro.
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Squick: Konoha finds herself falling for Arata, a sixth-grader who her parents are trying to arrange a marriage with. It's not clear how old either is, but even in the best case scenario of a three-year gap (12 and 15), Arata still clearly hasn't hit puberty yet, making Konoha look like a shotacon.
