YMMV / Doctor Who S35 E7 "The Zygon Invasion"

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The rebel Zygons being an analogy for radicalised Islamists has been criticized, not just the analogy itself, but also that it was presented in a very blatant manner.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Two weeks after this episode aired, there were a bunch of terrorist attacks in Paris, making it kind of hard to watch.
    • The episode aired just after a plane was brought down with the primary cause suspected to be terrorists.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Fans were really excited, shortly before the season started, by the teaser shot of Jenna Coleman packing a rocket launcher. Turns out their enthusiasm for "Clara gets badass!" was unwittingly directed at a Zygon that almost killed Clara.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Following on from the cliffhangers of "The Magician's Apprentice" and "Under the Lake", this episode's Cliffhanger suggests that Kate and Clara are already dead, and that the Doctor and Osgood will be following them shortly with their plane being shot down. The only death that might turn out to be real is Kate's, and that's a mighty big "might" given the staging. To preserve suspense as to how our heroes will survive, there is no Next Time trailer at the end of the episode, and the promos for "The Zygon Inversion" focus on the Zygons' Evil Scheme instead.
  • Paranoia Fuel: The Zygons' shapeshifting abilities get milked for all the paranoia that they are worth, especially the reveal that Zygons no longer need to keep human alive to sustain the cloning process. The key example being the reveal that for most of the episode it was an evil Zygon double of Clara running about.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Despite the insistence by both the Osgoods and the Doctor that the Zygons are mostly peaceful and the "radicalized" ones believe themselves right, none of the Zygons score sympathy points. Most of the Zygons shown are murderous dicks and the only two exceptions are smug and useless (they reject the idea that there are problems, and the Doctor and UNIT's help. Then are easily captured and executed).
    • The soldiers who not only refuse to fire on obvious Zygons (who pointedly fail to answer any questions put to them), but are stupid enough to follow them into an obvious trap are this, despite it being played off as a tragedy.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: The relationship between the rebel Zygons and UNIT can easily be seen as an analogy for Islamic extremists and the West's response to it.
